Indiana State offering swimming instruction for children, adults
Goal is to provide awareness of water safety

TERRE HAUTE —
The Recreational Sports office at Indiana State University is offering six levels of swimming instruction beginning Sept. 6.
Each course will take participants entirely through the level they attend. At the end of the course they will be required to complete the certification requirements to pass the level and move on.
Participants must demonstrate the appropriate skills and behaviors for entry into each course level. Children must be at least 4 years old and be able to use the restroom facilities independently.
Children’s Learn to Swim classes are taught on Saturdays beginning Sept. 6 and running through Oct. 11.
Swim lessons are to be fun and will allow children to gain knowledge of skills that will keep them safe in and out of the water. The goal is to provide individuals with an awareness of the importance of water safety training and to provide general information on being safe.
The following levels will be offered at ISU:
Level I - Introduction
to Water Skills
10-10:45 a.m.
This class is for the very beginner as an introduction to water awareness.
Participants will have constant contact with instructor while in the water. Participants must be able to independently use the restroom facilities. This level is the first level of many to becoming familiar with the water.
Level II- Fundamental Aquatic Skills
10-10:45 a.m.
Participants will begin to be more independent in the water. There will be an introduction to floating, submerging head, and blowing bubbles.
There will also be a slight introduction into strokes and using arms and legs simultaneously. Must have completed American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level I: Introduction to Water Skills certificate or demonstrate all completion requirements in Level I.
Level III - Stroke Development
11-11:45 a.m.
Participants will continue with stroke development. They also will work on retrieving items from shallow end of the pool. There will be an introduction to deep water. Participants will be able to demonstrate strokes independently. Participants must have completed American Red Cross Learn-to- Swim Level II: Fundamental Aquatic Skills certificate or demonstrate all completion requirements in Level II.
Level IV - Stroke Improvement
11-11:45 a.m.
Participants will continue stroke development and rotary breathing. This level will introduce diving and focus on deep water instruction.
Participants must have completed American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim/ Level III: Stroke Development certificate or demonstrate all completion requirements in Level III.
ISU is also offering classes for adults.
The adult swim program provides an opportunity for participants to learn to swim, increase fitness level, refine strokes, or work on a specific stroke. Adult Learn to Swim classes meet on Tuesdays from Sept. 9 to Oct. 14.
Beginner:
Class time - 6:30- 7:30 p.m.
This beginning level course is designed specifically for people with little or no water experience. It will provide an understanding of the basic skills required for swimming such as floating, kicking, and breathing. No prior swimming experience is necessary.
Intermediate:
Class time - 7:30- 8:30 p.m.
This class is designed for people with an understanding of the basic skills of swimming and who want to further develop these skills. The class provides instruction in arm motions, timing and revision of floating, kicking, and breathing. The outcome of this course is to be able to swim proficient freestyle.
Cost of the programs are $35 per session, payable by cash, check, or credit card. Each session is six weeks long and is conducted in the arena pool at Indiana State.
