Community Garden educational programs set

Organizations to offer lessons on bugs, produce, harvesting

Special to the Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE Indiana State University, in partnership with Wabash Valley Master Gardeners, Sisters of Providence, White Violet Center for Eco-Justice and the Terre Haute Community Garden Initiative, will present a variety of educational programs for youth and adults beginning this month.

In “Beneficial Bugs,” the first program presented, learn the basics for identifying common garden insects and what they are saying about your garden. The youth program will be presented from 9 to 11 a.m. July 16 while the adult session will be from 10 a.m. to noon July 19.

August’s program, “Time to Eat,” gives gardeners ideas on what to do with all those tomatoes, zucchini and peppers. A family session is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 23.

The series concludes in September with the program “Harvest Celebration.” Gardeners will learn how to save plants, methods for collecting seeds and the best ways to store them.

A family session is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon for Sept. 20.

The programs, which will be conducted at the Community Gardens at the corner of 11th and Chestnut streets, are free and open to the public. Interested persons are encouraged to register with ISU’s Center for Public Service and Community Engagement.
