Terre Haute South Vigo High School students John Ryan, Sangeeth Jeevan and Anthony Nicoson competed in the Indiana Junior Classical League State Convention March 13 and 14 at Indiana University with their academic sponsor Mary Steppe.
Among 289 students from 15 high schools competing, Terre Haute South won first place in the Effie Douglas Membership Award for the greatest increase in membership in Latin Club.
Ryan took fourth in mythology and vocabulary, and fifth in pentathlon. Jeevan captured first in English Oratory with Ryan in second place.
Together, Jeevan and Ryan finished in fourth place in Certamen, an event similar to “Jeopardy!”
After academic competition, Nicoson raised money for the scholarship fund in the Rent-a-Roman program. Also, Ryan was the SV delegate to the general assembly. Kit Gambill’s South Latin Club (IJCL) scrapbook finished in fifth place. For “That’s Entertainment,” Jeevan and Ryan performed a rap about the first six books of the Aeneid to the applause of IJCL members in assembly hall.
Professor Peter Foss, Depauw University, presented archeological digs in Romanized North Africa.
