West Vigo Knowledge Master team scores more than 1,000 points

The West Vigo High School Knowledge Master team racked up a score of 1,222 points (an improvement of 55 points over its fall score last year).

It was the 16th straight competition in which the team scored more than 1,000 points, the 10th straight in which the team scored more than 1,100, and the fourth time the team has scored more than 1,200.

The team competed against teams from all over the United States and many foreign countries.

The competition lasted from 2:15 to 4:30 p.m. April 23, with 200 questions covered. The multiple-choice questions had five possible answers. Teams earn five points for a correct answer on the first try and two points for a correct second-try answer. Five bonus points can be earned in certain time frames (for example, answering in seven seconds or less earns five bonus points) if the first answer is correct.

The Vikings were perfect in two categories on the first try at an answer: six for six in recent events and two for two in useless trivia (a traditional strength for West Vigo High School). The team also nailed the right answer in four other categories, but had to go to a second answer on some questions: biology (16 questions), English (11), government (nine), and economics and law (eight).

Other categories and percentages of correct answers were: math 95 percent, American history 92 percent, health and psychology 92 percent, world history 87 percent, physics 86 percent, geography 82 percent, literature 80 percent, earth science 73 percent and fine arts 50 percent.

Team captains are Caleb Fleschner, Matt Perkins and Pete Rosene.
