Terre Haute: Chances Summer Day Camp scheduled
Chances Summer Day Camp 2008 is June 2 to Aug. 15 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Booker T. Washington Community Center, 101 S. 13th St., Terre Haute, IN 47802, (812) 232-5190.
It is for children in kindergarten through those having just completed fifth grade.
Fees: $75 per week/first child; $60 per week/two children; or $20 per day/first child; $15 per day/two children.
Cash, checks and vouchers are accepted.
The camp features summer program themes, arts and crafts, reading club, guest speakers, water play, sports, city pool and parks, music, drama, basketball, volleyball, kickball, gym/playground, lunch and two snacks/drinks.
Camp activities will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with supervised activities provided from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Open House and pre-registration is at 6:30 p.m. May 29.
Meals will be provided to all children without charge. Meals will be provided at the site and times are as follows:
Lunch, kindergarten to second grades, served from noon to 12:30 p.m. Lunch third to fifth grades, served from 12:30 to 1 p.m. For all children, morning snack served from 9 to 9:30 a.m., afternoon snack 3 to 3:30 p.m. Camp Counselors will be trained to meet high standards for the quality and effectiveness of the program, with safety as first priority.
Casey, Ill.: School to stage Mini-Relay for Life
Monroe School in Casey, Ill., will stage a Mini-Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society and educate its students about cancer awareness and healthy life choices.
The Mini-Relay for Life will run Monday through May 16 at Monroe School. The wrap-up event for the week’s activities will be a relay in the park (adjacent to Monroe) at 1:30 p.m. May 16. Area cancer survivors are invited to be our leaders for the relay.
Five hundred thirty K-6 students will walk in the park to celebrate, remember and fight back.
Terre Haute: South class of 1998 to stage reunion
The Terre Haute South Vigo High School class of 1998 will stage its 10-year reunion 7 to 10 p.m. June 21 in the Ohio Building downtown.
Cost is $25 per person/$45 per couple. RSVP by sending a check to P.O. Box 10468, Terre Haute, 47801.
Robinson, Ill.: Defensive driving courses planned
Several National Safety Council Defensive Driving Courses will be offered throughout the Illinois Eastern Community Colleges District during May.
Classes will be offered from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, Wattleworth Hall Room 106, Olney Central College; 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Science Building Room 26, Wabash Valley College; 6 to 10 p.m. May 14, Foundation Hall, Frontier Community College; and 6 to 10 p.m. May 17, South Campus Room 106, Lincoln Trail College, Robinson, Ill.
Julie Bunn will teach the completely revised course, which uses new training videos, a student handbook and various training materials. The course is being taught in cooperation with the 2nd and 4th Judicial Circuit Courts and is accepted as an “assigned driving course” as required for traffic-related court supervision. Some insurance companies will provide a discount for successful completers of this course. Participants successfully completing the course will receive a DDC-4 Certificate.
Cost is $50. Advance registration is required and may be made by calling (618) 544-8252. Class participants must bring their current valid driver’s license and a pen or pencil.
Indianapolis: South junior to receive scholarship at Gala
Terre Haute South Vigo High School junior Erica Sell will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship at the Hoosier Heroes Gala on Thursday evening at the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Indianapolis.
Sell nominated Cheri Lee from Riley Children’s Hospital as her Hoosier Hero in the Science and Technology Category and was selected from over 300 nominations submitted from students around the state. Lee will have an additional $2,000 scholarship awarded in her honor to an Indiana high school of her choice.
Hoosier Heroes, a program of Indiana Dollars for Scholars, was created to provide an opportunity for Indiana junior and senior high school students to identify Indiana citizens who have made significant contributions to society and who serve as role models and inspirational figures. The Hoosier Heroes program will culminate with the Thursday event that will honor the students, their Heroes and Dollars for Scholars chapters and volunteers in Indiana. The event also will celebrate National Scholarship Month.
“The purpose of Hoosier Heroes is two-fold: to recognize Hoosiers whose accomplishments have inspired local youth and to highlight the commitment of Indiana citizens to help our students pursue higher education,” says Bob Ballard, senior vice president, servicing, Sallie Mae Inc. chairman of the Indiana Dollars for Scholars board of directors.
Terre Haute: Schulte class of 1968 plans July reunion
The Schulte High School class of 1968 will stage its 40th class reunion July 25-26.
At 6 p.m. on July 25 is a gathering at the Copper Bar, 810 Wabash Ave., and at 6 p.m. on July 26 is hors d’oeuvres and dinner at 7:30 p.m. in the Sycamore Club, 200 Heritage Drive.
The Friday evening gathering is $10 per person and Saturday’s dinner is $40 per person. Reservations may be made (before June 26) by making your check out to Tom Dinkel, Class of ’68, P.O. Box 1046, Terre Haute 47808. Any members of the Schulte class of 1968 who have not heard from organizers are asked to call Larry Scheidler, (812) 877-6137 with their contact information.
Turkey Run: Dinner, art show, concert set Friday
The combined fine arts departments from Turkey Run Elementary and Turkey Run High School will stage the sixth annual Pomp and Plenty Dinner, Art Show and Concert on Friday.
The night will begin with dinner from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The meal will include pork chops, applesauce, green beans, bread and butter, drink and dessert. There will be an opportunity to view art work from both elementary- and high-school students. The artwork will be displayed in the cafeteria and around the school.
A concert consisting of the elementary band, junior high band, jr./sr. choir, and high-school band will begin at 7 p.m. The high- school director is Annette Munoz and the elementary band is conducted by Pat Harvey. Becky Loudermilk is the elementary- and high-school art teacher.
