Riverton Parke High School’s Academic Super Bowl teams turned in outstanding performances in the Class 4 competition of the district contest at Greencastle High School on April 15. Three Panthers’ teams — English, Fine Arts and Science — took home first place ribbons for their efforts, and all six RP teams placed in the top three spots.
No Panthers’ team qualified for the state finals at Purdue University this year, but this season marked the first time that all six RP teams placed in the top three spots in the same year. Riverton’s social studies team placed second, and the math and interdisciplinary teams were third. Eighteen schools from four classes compete at Greencastle.
English team members this year were Kacie Benell, Hannah Byers, Kayla Donnenhoffer, Jeanette Fitzpatrick, Thomas Hardesty, Jenna McFarland, Diana Smith, Darren Swick and Sara Yelich. The team is coached by Michael Lunsford.
Fine arts team members included Zach Babyak, Benell, Fitzpatrick, Austin Guoli, Hardesty and Lucy Miller. Lunsford also coached the fine arts team.
The math team, coached by Shannon Belcher, included Maria Balboa, Dylan Davis, Megan Kraemer, Francesca Garbarino, Andrea Jenkinson, Kylie McNeill, Megan Vincent and Shawn White.
The science team, which took home its first-ever, first-place ribbons, was coached by Laura Bennett. Members included Davis, Brock McMullen and Yelich.
The social studies team, coached by Sande Bemis and Michael Butler, included Donnenhoffer, Sara Julian, Matti Lynn, Cody Mason, Niles Meschen, McMullen, Swick, Nico Ungari and Vincent.
This year’s contest was concerned with the study of the Civil War Era: 1820-1877. Academic Super Bowl is sponsored by Purdue University and the Indiana Association of Secondary Principals.
