Sarah Scott

On Saturday, about 6,000 students competed in the 22nd statewide Indiana Academic Super Bowl Junior Division from 225 junior high or middle level schools. Sarah Scott Middle School was host site for the 9 a.m. competition in Terre Haute.

Before the competition, invitational competitions were staged to “warm up” for the area competitions at various host sites around the state.

Each school was represented in the competition by three to five persons on a subject area squad with as many as 30 students representing the school on the various squads. Subject area rounds were staged in social studies, mathematics, English and science. A fifth round of completion, the Interdisciplinary, was the climax of the competition. Subject area squads tried to win area awards and qualify for state placings.

The theme of the competition was “The Civil War: 1820-1877.”

Other middle schools competing from the Vigo County School Corp. included Chauncey Rose, Honey Creek, Otter Creek, West Vigo and Woodrow Wilson.

Woodrow Wilson

The 41st Annual Student Art Exhibition runs April 12 through May 10 in the Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute. The following Woodrow Wilson students’ art work was on display at the show:

Eighth graders — Josh Ford’s pencil drawing of Bob Marley; Cody Gardner’s colored pencil drawing titled “The Sports Report”; colored pencil drawing by Marcus Phillips titled “A Few of My Favorite Things”; Andrew Throckmartin’s mixed media drawing titled “Mischievous”; and Marlon Williams’ watercolor/pen and ink rendering of a cheetah titled “Cool Cat.”

Seventh-graders — Danielle Dahmer’s collage titled “Just Ducky”; a charcoal drawing titled “Crystal Dolphin Rising” by Regine Edwards; Stephen Koos’ pencil self-portrait titled “Myself”; and Chelsea Stockwell’s watercolor self-portrait titled “Confused Me.”

Sixth-graders — Mary Ann Etling’s relief print of a whale titled “Whale of a Day”; Raven Renn’s colored pencil drawing titled “Celtic Knot”; and a colored pencil drawing titled “Slimy, Melting, Burning Candy” by Kai Stratten. Many thanks to these talented students for all their hard work and extra time involved. They are outstanding representatives for our school!

— Jo Anne Fiscus, Linda Hill and Mindy Lewellyn

The students of the eighth-grade Cardinal team have had an interesting past few months at Woodrow Wilson. On April 9, the students participated in a simulation called Let’s Get Real, put on by the Junior Achievement Association. The activity is a simulation of a real-life situation in which the students are given a job and a salary. They are then asked to pay for such things as housing, child care, transportation and taxes. This activity teaches the students budgeting as well as overall life skills.

During Earth Week, the students had a guest speaker come in from the Wolf Park rescue group. Two representatives from the facility presented an overview of the staff requirements. They raise and socialize wolves.

In English classes, the students have been studying “The Diary of Anne Frank” in great detail. The study of the Diary was preceded by a short study of the Holocaust and a virtual tour of the Candles Holocaust museum. They viewed a slide show about the life of Anne Frank, listened to the Diary on audio tape, and watched excerpts of the movie to better grasp the concepts of the book.

In our math classes, the students have been working with a school liaison, Melissa Walker. Mrs. Walker has been supplementing our regular math lessons with hands-on activities that will assist in making the regular math lessons more concrete.

In social studies, the students have spent time working with civil rights and their literal meaning to their lives. They participated in a segregation simulation in which the students re-enacted life as an African-American in the 50’s. They were only allowed to drink from certain water fountains, sit in poor seating in the cafeteria, only allowed to use certain restrooms, and seated in specific areas of classrooms. After the experience, the students composed a reflective paper on their overall experience and feelings of segregation.

The team is putting on a positive rewards trip for our well-behaved students on May 21. We will travel after school to Indianapolis to Pan Am Plaza to ice skate. We will then take the children to Circle Center Mall for dinner and shopping.

Riverton Parke

The Riverton Parke FFA traveled to Owen County to participate in the area livestock contest on April 18, and brought home first-place honors. The team of Anna Krieger, Cory Edge, Katie Paxton and Kalyn Rose won the contest and earned a trip to the state contest at Purdue University on May 17.

Edge was second overall in the contest, followed by Rose in 12th, Krieger in 13th, and Paxton, 31st. Others competing that day included the eighth-place team that didn’t qualify for state. Members of that team were Jacob King, Peter Krieger, Casey Abrell and Hillary Frazier. The 12th place team also came from RP; Adam Byers, Heath Rohr, Garrett Brown and Jordan Cobb were members.

Turkey Run

Fifty-eight girls from Turkey Run Elementary and Jr. High Schools attended the Second Annual Healthy Choices for Girls Conference at Bloomington on April 10-11.

The conference was for girls in grades 5-8 and covered issues that pre-teen and teen girls deal with daily in their lives. The participants attended a session with Julie Laipply, an award-winning speaker on successful choices for youth. The girls also participated in small-group sessions on topics that included MySpace and Internet safety, female relationships, life choices, girl bullies, personal fitness, goal setting and body image/confidence.

Tours of Ivy Tech and Indiana University also were included in the program. Information about vocational/educational programs and the 21st Century Scholars opportunities were presented to the girls attending.

The conference was sponsored by the Parke County Community Foundation and the TRES and TRHS building principals.
