Rose's dream soccer season ends with 3-0 loss to Franklin & Marshall

MECHANICSBURG, PA. — The best season in Rose-Hulman men’s soccer history came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Franklin & Marshall in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Franklin and Marshall standout Ben Beaver scored once in each half to provide the offense, and goalkeeper T.J. White recorded a shutout to lead the defensive effort for the Diplomats.

Franklin & Marshall outshot Rose 12-5 in the contest, with senior Mike Schiff leading the Engineers’ offense with three shots.

The first goal came in the 17th minute when Beaver finished a play in the box off a pass from Ryan O’Connell. The Engineers nearly tied the score late in the first half when sophomore Mike Smyser fired a shot that was deflected by senior William Senat that hit the post.

Franklin & Marshall pushed the score to 2-0 in the 55th minute when Beaver scored his 15th goal of the season on another nice finish after a pass from Sam Lane.

The final goal came in the 83rd minute when Franklin & Marshall was awarded a free kick just outside the box. After an initial blast and a battle for possession, Ryan O’Connell booted home the insurance goal.

Rose-Hulman completes a season that featured a 12-6-5 record, the first two NCAA tournament wins in program history, and another Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament title. The season highlight was a 1-0 victory at No. 1 ranked Ohio Wesleyan in the second round of the NCAA tournament last weekend.
