Rose-Hulman's Orion Martin is All-America swimmer

INDIANAPOLIS — Rose-Hulman sophomore Orion Martin became the third All-America swimmer in Engineers history Thursday night, placing seventh in the men’s 100-yard butterfly in the NCAA Division III championships at the IUPUI Natatorium.

Martin had qualified ninth nationally with a time of 48.92 seconds while swimming the event at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship meet.

He bettered that time in qualifications Thursday morning when he swam 48.88 and was seeded seventh going into the national finals. His finals time was 49.33.

Previous Rose All-Americans were Matt Smith, who was honored four times, including the 2003 national championships in the 100 breaststroke, and Sean Valentine, who had fourth- and sixth-place finishes in 1999.

Ellie Hong will compete for the Engineers today in the women’s 100 backstroke. She and Martin also will compete Saturday — Hong in the 200 backstroke, Martin in the 100 freestyle.

Both Engineers also competed Wednesday, with Hong placing 39th in the women’s 50 freestyle in 24.65 and Martin finishing 49th in the men’s 50 freestyle in 21.47.

It’s the second trip to the national finals for Martin, who was just one place away from national honorable-mention All-America honors last season. Hong, a freshman, is the first female swimmer in school history to reach the national finals.
