Bluffton nips Rose-Hulman men

Bluffton, Ohio — Bluffton placed three players in double figures to capture a tightly contested 62-56 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball victory over visiting Rose-Hulman on Saturday.

Bluffton never trailed in the contest but also never led by more than eight points.

Sophomores Jake Dodd and Julian Strickland paced a balanced Rose scoring attack with 10 points.

Will Pope led the Beavers with 14 points off the bench, and Dustin Kinn added 12 points on four 3-pointers.  Brent Farley contributed 11 points.

Bluffton jumped out to a 6-0 lead by holding the Engineers scoreless for the first seven minutes, then built an 11-3 edge at the 12:06 mark. Rose rallied to force a tie at 15-15 on a jumper by Strickland at the 7:51 mark.

The contest featured ties at 19 and 21, before Bluffton scored six straight points to gain a 29-25 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Rose forced another tie at 29 on a score by Strickland with 18:21 remaining. Bluffton rebuilt another six-point lead before the Engineers rallied to within 51-49 on a 3-pointer by senior Blake Knotts, 54-52 on another trey by junior Jon Gerken and 58-56 with 1:18 left on a 3-pointer by senior Jason Haslag.

Rose forced a missed shot on the next Bluffton possession, before turning the ball over themselves. Josh Fisher scored on a layup with 24 seconds to give Bluffton a 60-56 lead, and the Beavers held Rose off the board for the remainder of the game.

• Rose women lose — At Bluffton, Ohio, Rose-Hulman rallied from an 18-point second half deficit to close within six points, but could not overcome Bluffton in a 70-62 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball loss on Saturday.

Bluffton built a 54-36 lead with 9:34 remaining and maintained a double figure lead at 60-49 at the 4:51 mark. Rose battled back to within six points at 60-54 on a three-pointer by sophomore Heather Finnell and again at 62-56 on another score by Finnell.

Bluffton pushed the lead to eight points again, before freshman Grace Gibbs brought the Engineers within 64-58 at the 1:28 mark. The Beavers added four free throws in the final minute and earned a defensive stop to push the lead back to 68-59 and secure the victory.

Finnell led Rose-Hulman with a career-high 23 points on 8-of-16 from the field and 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Senior Alisa Dickerson added 13 points, and freshman Sheree Williams also reached double figures with 12.

Briittany Stegmaier scored a team-high 18 points for Bluffton, who also received 16 points from Brittany Lewis, 15 from Lauren Hutton and 10 from Rachel Daman.
