Metro roundup: Rose-Hulman's Strickland earns national D-III honor

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman senior Julian Strickland has been named to the National Team of the Week for his efforts in last week’s two men’s basketball victories.

Strickland scored a career-high 41 points to earn his conference-leading fifth HCAC Player of the Week award and first appearance on the National Team of the Week so far this season. He finished 13 of 20 from the field and 12 of 13 from the free-throw line with seven rebounds and four assists in an 85-65 win at Manchester on Saturday.

Strickland added 17 points with seven rebounds and three assists in a 65-54 triumph at Earlham on Feb. 5. For the week, Strickland averaged 29.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game.

Heading into Wednesday night’s home game against Hanover, he led the HCAC in scoring at 22.5 ppg.

• ISU season opens up Friday — The weather outside may be frightful, but the “Boys of Summer” are ready to heat things up as Indiana State is set to take the lid off its 2014 season this weekend in the Snowbird Baseball Classic at Port Charlotte, Fla.

The Sycamores will play four games over three days, starting with the season opener at 1 p.m. Friday against Auburn. ISU will play twice Saturday, going up against Connecticut at 11:30 a.m. and Ohio State at 3 p.m. The Sycamores and Buckeyes will play a second time at 1 p.m. Sunday.

This is Mitch Hannahs’ first season as head coach of the Sycamores and while he has looked forward to this moment for quite some time, he still has question marks about the team.

“We have inexperienced pitchers and veteran position players that will need to carry us early on,” he said. “I know by the end of the season, we will be a much better team.”

Friday’s game will be played at Charlotte Sports Park, the spring-training home of the Tampa Bay Rays and home to the Rays’ Class A Advanced affiliate, the Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Florida State League. The final three games will be played at North Charlotte Regional Park.
