Another NCAA title for Rose’s Evans

GRINNELL, Iowa — Junior Liz Evans of Bicknell became the second Rose-Hulman student-athlete to earn three career NCAA Division III national championships by winning the women’s high jump at Friday’s 2012 indoor national meet at Grinnell College.

Evans cleared 5 feet, 101⁄2 inches for a school record and the fourth-best jump in Division III history to win her third consecutive high-jump national championship. Shelby Demos of Wisconsin-Whitewater also cleared 5-101⁄2 but had misses on two previous heights, compared to Evans’ perfect jumping in the competition.

The duo outdistanced eight other competitors who cleared 5-5. Erin Hollinger of Case Western captured third place with no misses at the height.

Evans became the fifth woman in Division III history to win three career high-jump national championships and the fourth female to win three consecutive titles. She also won the 2011 Division III indoor and outdoor high-jump championships.

Evans’ decorated career also includes five All-American awards, including two national runner-up finishes.

The mathematics and electrical-engineering double major joins javelin national champion Chris Trapp (1984-86) as the only three-time national champions in Rose history.

Also on Friday, senior Sutton Coleman recorded a strong performance in the men’s 60-meter hurdles to advance to this afternoon’s championship round. Coleman placed second in his heat with a time of 8.09 seconds.

Coleman has earned four All-American honors in his career, with national finishes of fourth, sixth and a pair of eighth-place efforts entering today.

Andrew Schipper owns Rose-Hulman’s career record for All-American honors with six and Evans now ranks second in school history with five. Coleman would earn his fifth career All-American award by completing today’s race.

Rose track and field history includes 43 All-American awards, eight individual national championships and seven national runner-up efforts after Evans’ performance Friday.
