Metro sports: Indiana State's Abdul-Qaadir honored by MVC again

TERRE HAUTE — Bilquis Abdul-Qaadir of Indiana State has been named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week for women’s basketball, the league announced Monday.

It’s the third Player of the Week honor for Abdul-Qaadir, who helped lead her team to the top seed in this week’s MVC Tournament in games last week.

Abdul-Qaadir scored 23 points on 8-for-14 shooting and added six assists in a 73-71 win at Drake, then was 11 for 19 from the field in a 28-point effort during an 85-72 victory at Northern Iowa. ISU shares the conference championship for the first time since 2006.

The Springfield, Mass., native was also Player of the Week on Nov. 11, Jan. 6 and Feb. 4 and Newcomer of the Week on Jan. 20. She leads the Sycamores in points (13.6 per game), assists (127) and steals (56).

ISU plays at 1 p.m. Friday against the winner of a Thursday play-in game between Loyola and Bradley.

In other MVC honors:

• Lockwood wins again — Sophomore Taylor Lockwood of Indiana State is the MVC Pitcher of the Week in softball for the second time this season.

She made three appearances during the Sycamores’ 4-1 week at the South Florida Under Armour Showcase, finishing with a 1-0 record and a 1.95 earned run average over 14.1 innings. The transfer from Butler also won the award on Feb. 24.

ISU is playing today at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla., against Bucknell and Creighton.

Track

• Montgomery competes this weekend — Rose-Hulman senior Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery begins competition Friday in Lincoln, Neb., at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

Montgomery is the 15th-ranked qualifier in the women’s mile, having run a time of 4:59.65 last month, and also won Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships in cross country, indoor mile and indoor 3,000-meter run this year.

Preliminary competition in the mile is 1:45 p.m. CDT on Friday, with the finals at 1:40 p.m. Saturday. The meet, hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan, is at the University of Nebraska.

It’s Montgomery’s second national competition so far this year. She finished 71st among 280 runners in the cross country nationals.

She is just the second female Engineer to compete for a national championship, joining five-time national high jump champion Liz Evans.

A.J. Reed at IU today

Kentucky, 13-3 and ranked 20th in the country, plays today at 16th-ranked Indiana (7-6) with the first pitch scheduled for 4:05 p.m.

Terre Haute South graduate A.J. Reed is not listed as Kentucky’s starting pitcher, but should be in the lineup. He’s started every game for the Wildcats and is batting .436 with eight homers and 28 RBIs in 16 games.
