Rose, Defiance to battle for first place today

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman and Defiance will square off in a battle for first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball standings at 3 p.m. today in Hulbert Arena.

Both teams enter the matchup with 14-4 overall records and 9-2 marks in HCAC play. They hold a one-game lead over Hanover and Mount St. Joseph in the battle for first.

Earlier this season, Rose earned a 58-57 victory at Defiance when the Yellow Jackets missed a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer.

Rose-Hulman rallied from a 12-point second half deficit to defeat Anderson University 68-66 in overtime on Wednesday night. Julian Strickland led the offensive effort with 25 points and Alec Houpt poured in a career-high 24 points to pace the performance.

The Engineers have won 11 of their last 12 games since early December. The stint included a nine-game winning streak that was snapped in a 67-62 loss to Hanover on Jan. 22.

Senior Julian Strickland continues to lead the HCAC in scoring at 22.2 points per game and needs one point to become the eighth player in school history with 1,500 career points.

The starting lineup also includes Jimmy Miller (10.5 ppg), Alec Houpt (7.3), Tyler Duffy (6.1) and Jordy Martin (5.0). The roster includes eight players averaging over four points per game and 12 players that have scored in double figures at least once.

Defiance has won five straight games since their  home loss to Rose-Hulman, moving back into a tie for first place in the league standings. The Yellow Jackets earned a key overtime home win over Hanover on Saturday and defeated archrival Bluffton 62-53 in their most recent game on Wednesday.

Senior Ryan Hicks leads Defiance in scoring at 18.1 points per game. Junior Bernard Edwards adds strength to the frontcourt with 15.6 points per game. The Yellow Jackets have started the same lineup in all 18 games, which includes Mason Roth (8.6 ppg), Travis Schomaeker (8.0) and Wade Wooley (5.2).

Rose-Hulman leads Defiance 10-8 overall and the two teams are tied at 8-8 in HCAC play. The Engineers have won five straight games in the series, dating back to the 2011-12 season.
