Rose track, field athletes shine at Friday Night Invitational

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman student-athletes combined for three NCAA qualification efforts, two school records and 16 event victories at the Engineer Friday Night Track and Field Invitational.

The performances included one automatic qualification to the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships in Columbus, Ohio, this March. Sophomore Liz Evans, a two-time NCAA Division III national runner-up as a freshman, recorded a high jump leap of 5-foot-71⁄4 to earn a return trip to the championships.

Junior Sutton Coleman topped a 33-year old school record originally set by Rose-Hulman Hall of Fame inductee Tony Allen with a provisional national qualification in the 55-meter high hurdles. Coleman won the event in a time of 7.72 seconds.

Senior Derek Bischak provisionally qualified for the national championships in his second event this season with an 800-meter time of 1:54.56 for the second-best mark in school history.  Bischak set a school record with a provisional national qualification in the mile run last weekend.

The women’s 1,600 relay team added the second school record of the night with a time of 4:15.87 that snapped the previous mark by over five seconds. Team members included freshman Christine Moravec, freshman Katherine Moravec, freshman Erin Cox and sophomore Creasy Clauser.

Junior Jeremiah Edwards also ranked second in school history with his winning time of 6.62 seconds in the 55-meter dash.  Senior Paul Bouagnon also added a sprint title with a time of 51.07 seconds in the 400-meter dash.  Junior Micah Aldrich rounded out the track event winners with a one-mile run time of 4:24.34.

Field event winners for the Rose-Hulman men included sophomore Collin Crowson in the pole vault (13-6 1/4); freshman Luke Winningham in the shot put (42-11); and Coleman with a triple jump leap of 44-61⁄4.

The Engineers also earned a sweep of the two men’s relay events. The 800-meter team of Bouagnon, sophomore Michael Johnson, graduate student Calvin Bueltel and freshman Clay Becker topped the competition with a time of 1:33.21. The 1,600 relay team featuring Coleman, sophomore Brent Augsten, freshman Tyler Hannan and Bouagnon won with a time of 3:28.11.

On the women’s side, the 800 relay team of Cox, sophomore Gloria Boxell, Christine Moravec and sophomore Tanya Colonna earned a victory with a time of 1:54.37. Junior Aleks Kampa earned a field event win in the shot put (35-1).

Sprint event winners for Rose-Hulman included Cox in the 200-meters (28.29) and Christine Moravec in the 400 (1:03.90).  Clauser finished a strong second and narrowly missed a school record in the 800 meters with her time of 2:18.91.  Colonna recorded a tie for first place in the pole vault with her leap of 9-61⁄4.

Rose-Hulman returns to action at the Engineer Invitational featuring 12 institutions from seven states next Saturday at the Sports and Recreation Center.
