Rose men get past Defiance; Rose women also win

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Rose-Hulman relied on a fast start to the second half to top Defiance College 76-67 in the first round of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament Friday night.

Junior Austin Weatherford scored a career-high 24 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field and 6-for-6 marksmanship from the line to lead the Rose offense.

Sophomore Julian Strickland added 18 points on 8-10 from the field. Junior Nate Gissentanner also reached double figures with 16 points.

Logan Wolfrum led the Defiance offense with his third 20-point game of the season against Rose-Hulman with 21 points. Anthony Brown and Kyle Tietje added 11 each.

The Engineers shot 60 percent from the field for the first time since a 2010 victory over DePauw. Rose led 35-30 early in the second half before enjoying a 12-3 run to increase its lead to 47-33 midway through the half.

Defiance pulled within 71-67 before Gissentanner buried a 3-pointer at the 1:06 mark to increase the edge to 74-67 and secure the victory.

Rose-Hulman (18-8) will face Hanover in today’s HCAC tournament semifinal round at 5 p.m. Defiance closed its season at 13-13.

Women’s basketball

Rose-Hulman 48, Manchester 37 — At Franklin, Rose-Hulman earned the first postseason win in the women’s program history with a first-round victory in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament Friday night.

Senior Alisa Dickerson and freshman Sheree Williams scored 16 points each to lead the Engineers. Dickerson grabbed 12 rebounds and Williams had seven. Freshman Heather Finnell also reached double figures with 11 points.

Erynn Meiklejohn had 10 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Manchester.

Rose won the game with defense, holding Manchester to just 21-percent shooting from the field. The Spartans also were just 2 of 15 from 3-point range.

The victory marks Rose-Hulman’s first in postseason history in their eighth trip to a conference tournament. The Engineers led 22-17 at the half, then built the lead to double figures and never trailed.

Rose-Hulman (9-17) will return to action in the HCAC semifinals against Hanover at 5 today. Manchester finished its campaign at 17-9.
