Metro roundup: Rose baseball loses 7-0 in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Mount Union University remained unbeaten this baseball season with a 7-0 victory over Rose-Hulman in a rain-shortened game Tuesday.

Mount Union improved to 5-0 when the game was called after eight innings due to significant rain.

Kyle Toma held the Engineers to three hits over six innings to earn the victory, with Ryan Sason pitching the final two frames in the combined shutout.

Rose mounted its best rally in the eighth when sophomore Caleb Kissel and sophomore Patrick Klima slapped back-to-back singles to start the frame, before Mount Union thwarted the comeback attempt.

Senior Andrew Benitez led Rose-Hulman with two singles for the day.

Rose-Hulman (2-1) will square off with St. John Fisher at 10:45 a.m. today.

Rose sweeps — At Clermont, Fla., Rose-Hulman kicked off its 2014 season Monday with two victories after topping Grove City (Pa.) 3-0 and Regis (Mass.) 7-1 in the College Spring Games at the Clermont National Training Center.

Marissa Stout of Terre Haute and Carly Heibel pitched complete games in two wins in the circle for the Engineers, while junior Lindsey Watterson and senior Jenna Martinek led the way at the plate with three hits.

Watterson’s performance included a double, an RBI and a stolen base, while Martinek added two RBI and a steal.

In Game 1 against Grove City, Stout broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI groundout to score junior Jessica Ahlborn, who walked to lead off the inning. The Engineers weren’t finished, as senior Allison Bowman dropped in an RBI single past the second baseman to make the score 2-0 Rose-Hulman.

The Engineers added to their lead in the top of the seventh, as sophomore Whitney Strain opened the frame with a blast to left field that gave RHIT an opening triple. Martinek then delivered the first part of a successful suicide squeeze, laying down the sac bunt to score Strain and make it 3-0.

Grove City opened the bottom of the seventh with single, but RHIT freshman first baseman Janel Lake completed an unassisted double play — snagging a line drive and catching the non-tagging runner at first — to end the game.

Stout kept the Grove City batters off-balance all game, holding the Wolverines to just three hits while striking out five in seven innings.
