Metro roundup: Rose-Hulman men's soccer advances to title game

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman advanced to the championship game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer tournament with a 3-0 victory over Hanover College on Tuesday night.

The second-seeded FEngineers will host Transylvania University, who upset No. 1 seed Earlham College earlier Tuesday.  Transylvania and Earlham played to a 1-1 draw, before Transylvania advanced with a 4-2 victory in penalty kicks.

Sophomore Mike Smyser scored the first goal of the match in the 24th minute, on a crossing pass from senior Drew Belk to take a 1-0 lead into the half.

Belk then scored goals in the 63rd and 76th minutes to help Rose-Hulman advance to the HCAC championship match.  Junior Drew Miller recorded six saves to lead the Engineer defensive effort.

Rose-Hulman and Transylvania will face off at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Engineer Intramural Field.

ISU players honored by MVC — Freshman forward Abby Reed and freshman goalie Brittany San Roman have been named the Missouri Valley Conference Players of the Week, announced by the league this week

Reed won her first Offensive Player of the Week honor, while San Roman picked up her first Goalie of the Week honors. This brings the Sycamores total of player of the week honors to three this season, with freshman goalie Abby Keller earning honors Oct. 1.

The freshman duo received the honors for their performances against Drake on Oct. 31. The Sycamores outlasted the Bulldogs in double overtime for a 1-0 win. The win helped secure the No. 2 seed in the upcoming State Farm MVC tournament in Evansville and the highest finish in the 13 year program history for the Sycamores.

In addition, ISU wrapped up the program’s first winning regular season and extended its winning-streak to five games, which ties the program record.

Reed scored the golden goal in the 104th minute of the second overtime period as she spun around a defender inside the box to beat Bulldog keeper Amy Swanson. She currently leads the Sycamores with 20 points on nine goals and two assists.

San Roman posted six saves and her fourth shutout of the season in the double-overtime victory. She faced 17 Bulldog shots on the evening in 103:15 minutes of play.

The Sycamores are back in action on Friday for the State Farm MVC tournament semifinals against No. 6 Drake at 4:36 p.m. ET. The game can be seen online on Valley Live.
