TERRE HAUTE — The Rose-Hulman football has been selected to finish fifth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this season, in a preseason poll of league coaches released Wednesday.
Rose-Hulman compiled its school record eighth consecutive season at .500 or above last fall with a 5-5 record and a 5-3 mark in HCAC play. The Engineers finished tied for fourth in the HCAC standings last season.
Franklin College, ranked No. 19 nationally in the preseason d3football.com national poll, was picked to defend its league title with seven first-place votes and 79 poll points. Hanover (67 points and two first place votes) and Manchester (54), which finished second and third in the conference last season, were picked second and third.
Mount St. Joseph received 45 poll points to capture fourth place. Rose-Hulman was just one point behind in fifth place with 44 points, followed by Bluffton (43), Defiance (40), Earlham (19) and Anderson (14).
The Engineers return 47 letter winners and 18 starters to the 2013 football squad. The returnees include seven returning starters on offense, eight on defense and three on special teams. More than 100 players are scheduled to report for preseason workouts in approximately 10 days.
Rose-Hulman opens the 2013 football season with a trip to Kalamazoo College on Sept. 7. The Engineers open their home schedule with a matchup against Centre College on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
* Stanbrough wins — At Oskaloosa, Ia., Jon Stanbrough won the rain-shortened feature in U. S. Auto Club sprint car racing Tuesday at Southern Iowa Speedway.
Stanbrough led all the way to win the main event shortened to 20 laps due to rain. Chase Stockon won his heat and placed fourth in the feature.
Five flips were recorded in the program.
