Rose women hold off late Franklin charge for win

FRANKLIN — Rose-Hulman’s women’s basketball team built a 13-point second-half lead and held off a late Franklin charge to earn a 54-49 victory in its Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener Wednesday night.

The Engineers topped a Franklin team that was picked to win the HCAC title this season in a preseason poll of league coaches.

Junior Alisa Dickerson led the offensive effort with 17 points, thanks in part to 8-for-8 shooting from the free-throw line.

Senior Donna Marsh added her 27th career double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds. Sarah Condra led the Grizzlies with 17 points.

Rose held Franklin to just 24 percent from the field in the first half to build a 24-16 lead at the break. The Engineers relied on strong defensive from the game’s beginning, holding Franklin to just five points in the first nine minutes to build a 13-5 lead.

In the second half, Rose built a 13-point lead at 36-23 with 10:06 left, but Franklin rallied to close within 48-44 on four straight points at the 1:50 mark. A rebound layup by Bowermaster kept the lead at six points, then Dickerson and Heather Finnell each hit two free throws in the last minute to secure the win.
