Rose-Hulman drops Earlham

Richmond — Rose-Hulman’s football team overcame a slow first half to defeat winless Earlham 21-7 Saturday afternoon to retain the Borders of the Borders Broadsword for the 11th straight year.

With the win, the Engineers reached their seventh consecutive season with a record of .500 or above at 5-5. They also claimed a tie for second place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Junior Kyle Kovach led Rose with 200 yards rushing on 44 carries and one touchdown. Kovach ended the day with 262 all-purpose yards.

Kovach finished with a single-season school record 298 carries and a 121.3 yards-per-game average. His 1,213 rushing yards places him second in program history for a season. He also set a record with 2,251 all purpose yards.

Junior Mitch Snyder threw for 192 yards on 16 of 31 passes and one TD against Earlham.

Freshman Grant DePalma led the defense with 11 tackles and one fumble recovery.

Rose-Hulman took a 6-0 lead late in the second quarter with a 17-yard run Kovach. A fumble recovery by the defense at the Earlham 17-yard line set up the score.

The Engineers added another score on their first drive of the third quarter with an 80-yard, eight-play drive that culminated with a 3-yard scamper by Snyder. Junior Parris Gray set up the score with a 44-yard TD reception. Snyder hit sophomore Joel Stiffler for the 2-point conversion to give the team a 14-0 lead.

Rose took a 21-0 lead on a 5-yard pass from Snyder to senior Sutton Coleman. A stop by the Engineers’ defense and 29-yard punt return by Kovach set up the 28-yard, five-play drive. Senior Nick Schneider booted the extra point.

Collin Draine intercepted a Snyder pass and returned it for a 35-yard touchdown to give Earlham a score. The successful extra point provided the 21-7 final.

Rose-Hulman will begin its 2012 season Sept. 1 at home against Kalamazoo.
