Metro roundup: Sycamores, UNI to be national ESPNU game

TERRE HAUTE — Indiana State’s final men’s home game of the college basketball season has been chosen for ESPNU’s 1 p.m. telecast on March 1. It’s Senior Day for the Sycamores.

“First and foremost, our four seniors deserve to have their final home game nationally televised while playing in front of a packed house,” coach Greg Lansing said. “Secondly, our last three home games, we would love to have all of Terre Haute, the Wabash Valley and all Indiana State students help us get ready for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Our fans inspire our team and I know we want to fight hard for them.”

ISU, currently 18-6 overall and 9-3 in league play, rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit at UNI on Feb. 1 to beat the Panthers — now 11-13 and 5-7 — by an 87-81 score.

The Sycamores’ 60-56 win Sunday over Drake gave them four consecutive seasons with 18 or more wins for the first time in school history.

ISU is currently 9-1 at home this season, 41-11 in Hulman Center during Lansing’s tenure as head coach.

The Sycamores play at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bradley.

• Two Engineers honored — Rose-HuIman’s Ryann-Rebecca Montgomery and Julian Strickland earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors in their respective sports, the league announced Monday.

Montgomery was named HCAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week after a nationally ranked, school-record performance in the 3,000-meter run. Her time of 9:59.38 at the Ohio Northern Invitational is eighth-fastest in the nation this year and also set an Ohio Northern facility record.

Strickland claimed HCAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors after recording the eighth 40-point game in Rose-Hulman history on Saturday at Manchester.

Strickland scored a career-high 41 points to earn his conference-leading fifth HCAC Player of the Week award so far this season. He finished 13 for 20 from the field and 12 for 13 from the free throw line with seven rebounds and four assists in an 85-65 win.

Strickland added 17 points with seven rebounds and three assists in a 65-54 win at Earlham on Wednesday. He leads the HCAC in scoring at 22.5 points per game.

The men’s basketball team continues to lead the HCAC at 17-4 overall and 12-2 in league play. Rose-Hulman hosts Hanover in the Senior Night Game on Wednesday at Hulbert Arena.  Track and field teams return to action at DePauw University on Saturday.
