TERRE HAUTE — Two men’s college basketball teams entered Hulbert Arena undefeated Wednesday night, but only one could leave that way.

That team turned out to be Wabash, which benefitted from a 35-23 rebounding edge to knock off host Rose-Hulman 58-44 and increase its record to 5-0.

Senior forward Derek Bailey paced the Little Giants from Crawfordsville with 26 points, thanks in large part to 10-for-12 marksmanship from the free-throw line and four 3-point goals. Nick Curosh, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound center, grabbed a game-high 12 boards for Wabash.

Rose’s top scorers were guards James Pillischafske and Julian Strickland with 14 and 10 points respectively. The Engineers shot only 31.1 percent from the field (14 of 45).

Wabash built a 12-5 advantage in the first 7-plus minutes after back-to-back treys by Bailey and reserve Jordan Surenkamp, then the home team pulled within 12-11 on a 10-foot jumper by Strickland, a layup by Jon Gerken and a pair of free throws by Strickland.

After taking a 21-16 lead into the second half, the visitors quickly padded their cushion to 32-23 with the help of a 7-0 run that consisted of a free throw by Curosh and baskets by Aaron Zinnerman, Brian Shelbourne and Kasey Oetting.

Two free throws and a 3-pointer by Pillischafske cut Rose-Hulman’s deficit to 32-28, but the Little Giants went on a 16-2 run to boost their margin to 48-30.

Eleven of those Wabash points came from Bailey.

The closest the Engineers could come after that was 11 (51-40, 53-42 and 55-44).

Rose (4-1) will begin the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference portion of its schedule Saturday when it travels to Defiance (Ohio) for a 3 p.m. contest.
