Ploof has big 2nd half for Rose women

Rose-Hulman sophomore Kelsey Ploof scored 16 second half points, including the last three points of the game, to help the Engineers top Earlham 49-47 in women’s basketball Wednesday in Hulbert Arena.

Ploof finished 9 of 14 from the field and 4 of 6 from the free-throw line in a 22-point, 10-rebound effort that marked her second straight double-double.

Senior Alisa Dickerson pitched in with 12 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and five blocks to provide depth for the Engineers.

Earlham held a 47-46 lead on a free throw by Charvonne Long with 1:05 remaining. Ploof scored in the lane on a pass from freshman Grace Gibbs with 49 seconds left to give Rose a 48-47 edge.

Nikki Darrett was blocked by Dickerson on the next Earlham possession, but Danielle Altman grabbed the rebound and had a chance to give the Quakers the lead. Her shot in the lane fell short and was rebounded by Ploof, who was fouled with 14.2 seconds left.

Ploof made one of two free throws to push Rose-Hulman ahead 49-47. Following a Quaker timeout, Bria Sneed missed a well defended 8-foot shot in the lane as time expired to lift Rose to the victory.

Junior Heather Finnell added six points, with Gibbs contributing five points and four assists for the Engineers.

Darrett scored a team-high 14 points for Earlham. Sneed contributed nine points to the Quaker effort.

Rose-Hulman (4-8 overall and 2-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) will play host to Mount St. Joseph at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hulbert Arena. Earlham dropped to 3-9 overall and 1-4 in league games.
