Balanced Rose tops Fontbonne

TERRE HAUTE — Senior forward Nate Gissentanner came off the bench to deliver 14 points for balanced Rose-Hulman in a 72-54 men’s basketball victory over Fontbonne University on Wednesday night in Hulbert Arena.

“It’s really good to see Nate get on track a little bit,” Rose-Hulman coach Jim Shaw said. “He’s had two good games in a row after a rough start. We need the energy and offensive jolt that he is capable of giving us.”

Shaw’s Engineers will enter the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) portion of their season with a 4-1 overall mark Saturday at home against Defiance.

“We’ve got to get better,” he warned. “It’s a long league season with a lot of good teams. I believe we’re one of them. These [HCAC] games in December will count in February and March”

The Engineers fell behind 3-2, 10-9 and 12-10 in the early going, but a Julian Strickland 3-pointer put them ahead to stay at 13-12 with 10:51 left in the first half.

Rose reserve Jake Dodd helped pad their cushion to 20-13 with a 10-foot jumper and a trey later in the half.

A pair of 3s and a driving basket through traffic by Gissentanner increased the Rose-Hulman advantage to 30-15 about 4? minutes before halftime. Then a crowd-pleasing, right-handed jam by freshman Jimmy Miller stamped an exclamation point on the Engineers’ dominance.

The home team continued to dominate the early part of the second half, building a 30-point margin at 57-27 on a Gissentanner layup with 11:59 remaining, then Fontbonne staged somewhat of a rally during garbage time.

Shaw said he was “very disappointed” in the way his players finished Wednesday’s game.

“Our backups did not do what they’re taught to do every day,” he explained. “We’re a team and I expect more from them. We were solid defensively, but I was very disappointed in our offensive rebounding and finishing some plays in the first half. I don’t want to sound too negative. We did some good things and built up a nice lead.”

After glancing at the stat sheet, Shaw found a few numbers that also distressed him.

“We got outrebounded by nine [41-32] and they shot 31 free throws [making 22],” he mentioned. “And that is really bad basketball on our part. But it was a nice, comfortable win and nobody [for Rose-Hulman] played over 20 minutes.”

Other than Gissentanner, no Engineer scored in double figures as 15 players saw action. Usual standout Austin Weatherford, a senior guard, did not enter the contest until the 4:21 mark of the first half. Shaw cited “a disciplinary reason” for his late entry.

Fontbonne’s high scorer was substitute Andrew Chism with 10 points, all on free throws.
