Metro: Mascari breaks ISU record in men’s 5,000

BLOOMINGTON — Indiana State sophomore John Mascari set a school record in the indoor men’s 5,000-meter run Friday at the Indiana Open.

The Terre Haute native ran a time of 14 minutes, 9.82 seconds to shatter the old mark of 14:24.

• Engineers play
— Rose-Hulman senior defensive tackle Dean Griffing and senior punter Eric Schaible competed for the South team in the fifth annual D-III Senior Classic on Friday night.

Results were not available before the Tribune-Star’s news deadline, but the D-III Senior Classic took place in Salem, Va., at the site of next weekend’s NCAA Division III championship game. The Classic included several of the nation’s top Division III players and had the mission “to provide more opportunity for small-college players to gain exposure to the pro scouts.”

Griffing earned first-team all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors in 2012 and 2013 and was named a Beyond Sports Network preseason All-American this season. He tallied 52 tackles, 16.5 tackles-for-loss, 8.5 sacks and two blocked kicks this season to lead the Engineers’ defensive line.

The mechanical-engineering major completed his Rose career with 140 tackles, 44.5 tackles-for-loss and ranks third in school history with 20.5 sacks.

Schaible captured second-team all-conference honors in 2012 and 2013 and leads all current Division III players in career punting attempts. He established career school record for punting attempts (224), punting yards (8,663) and punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line (49).

The chemical-engineering major had just eight touchbacks in his career to go along with the 49 punts inside the 20.

Griffing and Schaible helped Rose-Hulman earn its first conference championship in football since 1988 this fall. The Engineers finished 7-3 and earned a share of the HCAC title with Franklin at 7-1 in league play.

• McVicker competes far away again
— At Panama City, Jack McVicker of Terre Haute competed in the Masters lightweight black-belt division of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation’s Panama Open Championships on Dec. 1.

In the first round, McVicker finished off Cesar Luis Dias Graell of Panama with a single-wing choke hold.

In the championship match, he faced Helton Machado da Silva from Brazil. The six-minute match ended in a 0-0 tie, so it went to a referee decision and he awarded the victory to da Silva.

With the silver medal, McVicker wrapped up a year that included five first-place finishes and two seconds against world-class competition.

• Contest canceled — Inclement weather forced postponement of today’s Elks Hoop Shoot Contest at Terre Haute South High School.

No new date has been reported.
