Rose soccer scores biggest win in its history, ousting No. 1 in Division III tourney

DELAWARE, Ohio — Mike Smyser scored in the first five minutes Sunday, and the Rose-Hulman defense took care of the rest as the Engineers upset top-ranked, unbeaten Ohio Wesleyan 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament.

The biggest soccer victory in school history sends Rose-Hulman (12-5-5) into the sectional round against 19th-ranked Franklin & Marshall, which defeated Dickinson on Sunday. The match will be Friday, Saturday or Sunday but the exact time and site are still to be determined.

Smyser found the lower left corner of the goal in the fifth minute of Sunday’s play.

Ohio Wesleyan outshot the Engineers 23-4 for the day, but keeper Drew Miller had three first-half saves to keep his team in the lead.

The Rose-Hulman back line of Andrew Bartush, Spencer Johnson, Nick Kowalkowski and Max Brown held strong in the second half despite a flurry of crosses and shots from the Bishops.

It was the fifth consecutive shutout for the Engineers, who have not allowed a goal since Oct. 30 and just two goals in the last 11 matches.

Rose’s win on Thursday against Penn State Behrend, a scoreless draw decided by a 9-8 tally in penalty kicks, had already been a first for the Engineer program.

Now the Engineers have advanced to the final 16 of an NCAA tournament for the third time, men’s basketball having reached the final eight in 1977 and final 16 in 1982

They also now have defeated a No. 1 team for just the second time in history for any program. The 1998 men’s basketball team beat top-ranked Illinois Wesleyan.
