Rose-Hulman QB Landwehr to play in D-III bowl game

TERRE HAUTE — Senior quarterback Ryan Landwehr will represent Rose-Hulman in the Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl Game of the Stars) in Monterrey, Mexico, on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Landwehr will compete for Team Stars & Stripes, comprised of standout NCAA Division III players from across the country.  The opposition will be the CONADEIP All-Stars from Mexico.  The contest will take place at the 36,000-seat Estadio Tecnológico on the Tec de Monterrey campus on Saturday afternoon.

Landwehr set Rose-Hulman single-season school records for pass completions (234) and total offense (2,915 yards) this season.  He finished second in single-season school history in completion percentage (65.0%) and touchdown passes (21). The three-time conference Offensive Player of the Week passed for 2,456 yards and also rushed for 459 yards and an HCAC leading 11 touchdowns to earn all-league recognition.

In the classroom, Landwehr carries a perfect 4.00 grade point average in electrical engineering and was honored as the Most Outstanding Sophomore for his academic achievements.  He has also been named a Heminway Scholar, is a member of the Eta Kappa Nu Honor Society, and is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

This season, Landwehr became the first Rose-Hulman quarterback chosen as a first-team Capital One Academic All-American.  His efforts helped lead the Fightin' Engineers to a share of their first conference championship since 1988.

The NCAA Division III all-star roster known collectively as Team Stars & Stripes flew to Mexico on Sunday and will be led by head coach Don De Waard, the defensive coordinator at Central College (Iowa).  The veteran of previous Tazón de Estrellas games and its predecessor the Aztec Bowl won on his head-coaching debut in 2012 as Team Stars & Stripes triumphed 32-15 at in Guadalajara.

Cesar Martinez, who took over the head-coaching role at Tec de Monterrey from legendary retired coach Frank Gonzalez, will coach the CONADEIP All-Stars.

The 16th annual post-season game in Mexico for NCAA Division III will feature a 52-man Team Stars & Stripes roster selected from 27 Division III schools who will travel to Monterrey for a combination of two-a-day practices with an opportunity to explore the region before the Saturday game.  Players will also experience the local culture and participate in a community service project.

The colleges and universities represented on the Team Stars & Stripes roster are: Augustana, Buena Vista, Central, Coe, Cornell (Iowa), DePauw, Elmhurst, Endicott, Grinnell, Grove City, Hanover, Kalamazoo, Kenyon, Lake Forest, Lawrence, Loras, MacMurray, Ohio Northern, Pacific (Oregon), Rhodes, Rose Hulman, St. Norbert, Susquehanna, Wisconsin-Stout, Utica, and Wartburg.
