Rose-Hulman Roundup: Tennis opens strong

Rose-Hulman opened its 2008 fall tennis season Saturday by sweeping matches against visiting Brescia and Kentucky Wesleyan.

Sam Danesis and Caitlin Kohli were winners in both singles and doubles in both matches as the Engineers beat Brescia 8-1 and Kentucky Wesleyan 5-4.

Rose plays today at the IU-Southeast Tournament.

Singles — Sam Danesis (RH) def. Emily Harp 6-2, 6-4; Jennifer Settle (KW) def. Megan Chann 6-2, 6-2; Amanda Nichols (KW) def. Betsy Marschand 6-3, 6-1; Caitlin Kohli (RH) def. Katie Cecil 6-4, 6-2; Heather Algwood (KW) def. Maritza Gonzalez 6-3, 6-2; Ellyn Norris (RH) def. Brittany Theis 6-0, 6-0.

Singles — Danesis (RH) def. Candace Staggs 6-0, 6-1; Mariah Tendley (B) def. Chann 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-3; Zawadski (RH) def. Kayla White 6-0, 6-0; Marschand (RH) def. Kellie Childress 6-0, 6-2; Kohli (RH) def. Lecie Thomas 6-0, 6-0; Norris (RH) def. Liz O’Neil 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles — Chann-Danesis (RH) def. Staggs-Tendley 8-2; Wilson-Zawadski (RH) def. Childress-Thomas 8-1; Gonzalez-Kohli (RH) def. Tucker-White 8-0.

Soccer

n Both Rose teams fall — At Greenville, Ill., Rose-Hulman teams lost a pair of matches against Principia on Saturday.

Clint Vatterrodt had the only Rose-Hulman goal of the day in the men’s team’s 5-1 loss. The women fell 3-0.

Both teams host Earlham next Saturday, the women at 5 p.m. and the men at 7.

Rose-Hulman’s women are 1-1, its men 0-2.
