Four-time national champion Marietta College ended the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament run for Rose-Hulman with a 5-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Adrian College.
T.J. Knowlton kept the Rose offense off balance by allowing six hits and just two runs in seven innings of work to improve to 4-1 on the season. Mark Williams struck out five in the final two innings for his first save.
Nick Maloney tossed a strong 82⁄3 innings for Rose to keep the Engineers within striking distance. Maloney scattered 11 hits and allowed four earned runs with five strikeouts against a Marietta team that entered the game batting .325 with 362 runs scored and 122 doubles in 46 games.
Offensively, Tim Tepe and Keenan Long had two singles and one run each in the seventh inning. Michael Kovacs and Troy Eveslage added the RBIs during rally.
“Marietta was outstanding today. They executed and their defense is as good as any we’ve ever seen at this level. They carried themselves professionally and stay at the top of the region every year. We gave ourselves a chance at the end, Nick did everything we asked him to do and it was a nice effort today,” said Jenkins.
Rose-Hulman completed its season with a 32-14 record in its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
“We did a lot of great things this year. Tim Tepe had the most outstanding offensive season in school history and we got a lot of production out of many players. Our pitching kept us in games all year, and we played great defensively with a school record 54 double plays. We’re planning to be back here for the third time in a row next year,” said Jenkins.
