Rose softball stumbles in HCAC tournament

— The College of Mount St. Joseph advanced to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference softball tournament championship game with a 7-4 victory over top-seeded and host team Rose-Hulman at the Engineer Softball Field on Saturday.
Defiance defeated MSJ in the championship game that followed, 11-5 in 13 innings, to compete a perfect 3-0 run in the tournament. With the win, Defiance earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Rose took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, but MSJ grabbed the lead for keeps with a four-run outburst in the top of the fourth inning.
Ashleigh Stallkamp led the MSJ offense with a three-run home run and two runs scored. Casey Brookbank added a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the sixth inning that provided a key insurance run.
Katie Lawrence earned the pitching victory with 42/3 innings of work and two earned runs allowed, scattering six hits with one walk and one strikeout. Katie Cohill pitched 21/3 innings to earn her fourth save of the season.
For Rose, senior Ashley Montgomery recorded three hits and two RBIs to lead the offensive effort. Jordan Goslee and Darcie Thomas also had two hits each for the Engineers.
Rose-Hulman (25-12) will hold out hope of receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament from the national committee on Monday.
