TERRE HAUTE —
Tyler Wampler was 3-for-4 and had three RBI as the Terre Haute Rex earned its maiden victory of the 2013 season with a 6-0 victory over Springfield at Robin Roberts Field.
The game was called in the sixth inning due to rain, but not before the Rex (1-1) pounded 11 hits off Springfield pitching. Sliders starter Brendan Kleekamp was chased after just three innings as he allowed eight hits and four earned runs.
Terre Haute scored on a first inning groundout, then put three runs on the board in the second inning. Owen Conway’s solo home run and Kyle Kempf’s two-run double provided the scoring to make it 4-0.
Wampler’s two-run single in the fourth provided the remaining runs. Kempf and Atlee Schwab were both 2-for-3 for the Rex.
Rex starting pitcher Kyle Zimmerman struck out five and allowed just three hits in five innings of work.
Terre Haute hosts Hannibal tonight.
