High drama, but no win

TERRE HAUTE — Pinch-hitter Michael Eberle provided patient Terre Haute Rex fans with plenty of excitement by belting a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the score against the Springfield Sliders at 9-9.

But Springfield’s Matthew Tellor grounded an RBI single into right field in the top of the 10th and the Sliders held the home team scoreless in the bottom half of the frame to leave Bob Warn Field with a 10-9 victory in a Prospect League baseball game that lasted almost 4 hours.

Despite the loss, the Rex remain in first place in the Prospect League West Division second-half standings with a 7-3 record heading into a 7:05 p.m. rematch with Springfield (5-5) today at Bob Warn Field.

On Sunday, the Rex jumped ahead 1-0 on an RBI double by Michael Schroeder in the first. But the visitors answered with a pair in the second — the first coming on a solo homer to left field by Mike Fitzgerald Jr. — to move ahead 2-1.

Terre Haute knotted the score at 2-2 with an unearned run in the fourth, then the Sliders used doubles into the left-field gap by Reagan Fowler, Wade Rothermich and Michael Hurwitz in the fifth to produce two more runs and seize a 4-2 advantage.

An RBI double to deep right-center by Nick Johnson in the bottom of the fifth pulled the home squad within 4-3.

The score didn’t change again until the top of the eighth when Springfield erupted for three runs. An RBI groundout by Fowler produced the first and Conner Dunn produced the next two with a single to left that plated Sean Gerber and David Kerian.

The Rex responded with two in the bottom of the eighth to cut their deficit to 7-5. Pinch-hitter Tanner Glore led off with a walk, Kyle Kempf doubled down the third-base line and Spencer Mahoney walked to load the bases, setting the table for a sacrifice fly by Nate Bowles and a run-scoring wild pitch.

The Sliders appeared to assume control with a two-run homer to right-center by Tellor in the ninth, giving them a 9-5 lead.

Then the real fireworks started.

Patrick Chandler and Edmund Cheatham led off the bottom of the ninth with walks. After a flyout and a strikeout, Kempf singled in Chandler to make the score 9-6 and Eberle followed with his game-tying bomb — his first roundtripper of the season — to left field.

But Conner Dunn led off Springfield’s half of the 10th by getting hit by a pitch. A fielder’s choice, a wild pitch, a walk and another fielder’s choice enabled Tellor to send home Rothermich with his single that rolled between the first and second basemen.

The Rex put two runners on base in the bottom of the 10th, but Springfield reliever Justin Hunsaker coaxed the final batter into grounding out.

Twelve pitchers were used in this hard-fought matchup — seven by the Rex and five by the Sliders. Leading hitter for the Rex was Kempf, who went 4 for 5 with three runs scored.

Tellor went 3 for 5 with three runs batted in and two runs to pace Springfield.

The Rex swept Hannibal on Saturday, winning the second game of the doubleheader 6-1 after a 4-3 victory in the opener.
