TERRE HAUTE — What Indiana State players giveth, they taketh away.

That was the case for the Terre Haute Rex against the Dubois County Bombers in Prospect League baseball action Friday.

The Rex took an early lead against Bombers starter and ISU pitcher Sean Manaea.

But later, when the Rex pitching staff was laboring, ISU first baseman Jon Hedges knocked in the go-ahead run for the Bombers and ISU reliever Kurt Kudrecki got the Bombers out of a jam in the eighth inning.

Dubois County held on for an 8-5 victory in front of 834 fans at Warn Field.

Rex manager Brian Dorsett wasn’t happy with the way Terre Haute closed the game out after it led 4-0 after four innings.

“Tonight was a lesson in how you let a ballgame get away from you. We had so many opportunities early. We had three hits in the first inning and didn’t score a run. We had a lot of situations tonight we have to learn from. We have to, or those who don’t won’t be playing,” Dorsett said.

The Rex had 12 hits and drew nine walks, but it didn’t do them as much good as it should have as they stranded a whopping 16 runners.

“We didn’t knock runners in when we needed to. We let them back in the game and they did what they needed to do to win. We didn’t,” said Rex center fielder Chris Manning, who was 4-for-6, but who scored only one run.

Manaea labored through 32⁄3 innings, including a three-run fourth inning that did him in early.

Manaea got in trouble in the first, but emerged unscathed as the Rex stranded the bases loaded. He wasn't as fortunate in the second as a Manning RBI single put the Rex on the board with a 1-0 lead.

The game really got away from Manaea in the fourth. Cameron Fagg led off out of the nine-hole with a double. Manning knocked Fagg in with a double of his own and Manning scored on a Ronnie Mitchell triple to make it 3-0.

Manaea walked two more batters and allowed an RBI groundout by Chace Mitchell before the plug was pulled.

“I thought it was a big advantage for them to have [Manaea] on the mound because he knows it. So I was really pleased with the way we came out and hit the ball. We just left too many guys out there,” Dorsett said.

The Rex didn't easily hold on to its 4-0 lead. Terre Haute starter Christian Slaznik struggled through the fifth inning. With two outs, Nick Stoia hit a run-scoring single and Grant Zawadzki rapped a two-run double to left to make it 4-3.

Slaznik, who pitches at Eastern Illinois, pitched into the sixth inning before he gave way for reliever Darrin Vestring.

Vestring was effective until the eighth inning. Kirby Campbell led off with a single, stole second, and tied the game on a Joe Perez single. Perez went to second on the throw home and it was tied 4-4.

Vestring was lifted for Chris Bosenberry, but the Bombers kept on hitting. A RBI single to left by Hedges scored Perez, and after a double by Bombers' catcher Brian Norwood, pinch-runner Mike Morrissette scored on an error by Rex first baseman Nick Johnson to make it 6-4.

The Rex rallied in the eighth. Jordan Pearson reached via a two-out single and came home on a throwing error on a grounder by Nick Paradossi. But another ISU player, pitcher Kurt Kudrecki, got the Bombers out of trouble with their one-run lead intact.

It wouldn't be a one-run lead for long. Kirby Campbell reached on a Rex error and T.J. Thomas crushed a two-run home run to left to make it 8-5.

The Rex (1-1) are at Quincy and Hannibal for its next two games before they return home to play Nashville on Monday.

“This is a game I mark on the calendar that will set the stage for the rest of the season,” Dorsett said.
