QUINCY, Ill. — A five-run ninth-inning rally fell far short for the Terre Haute Rex on Sunday night in Prospect League baseball.

But although the Rex lost to the host Quincy Gems 11-6 on Sunday, they beat the same team 3-2 in a late Saturday game, enabling them to split the two-game series and leave town retaining a 3 1/2-game lead in the West Division standings.

Unofficially the magic number for the Rex to clinch the second-half division championship is four. The team has a 7:05 p.m. home game Tuesday against the Danville Dans.

The Rex had a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning Sunday, having scored in the top of the fourth on a double by Brett Teschner. Quincy tied the game in the fifth, got two more runs in the sixth, and pulled away the final two innings thanks to Rex errors and two homers by the Gems.

Four pinch-hitters helped the ninth-inning rally. Tanner Glore led off with a walk, and after a single by Teschner a hit by Michael Eberle loaded the bases, a walk to Kyle Zimmerman brought in one run and a grounder by Nate Bowles drove in another.

Two more runs scored when Edmond Cheatham was safe on an error, and Cheatham scored on a single by Patrick Chandler before the Gems recorded the game’s final two outs.

Bowles had two hits and scored a run in Saturday’s win, with Chandler getting a double and an RBI and Spencer Mahoney and Kyle Kempf driving in runs.

Michael Schroeder didn’t allow an earned run to get the win, and three relievers preserved the lead in the seventh, eighth and ninth. Josh Dove escaped a seventh-inning jam, and Grant Reifers struck out the last two batters for the save.
