Inconsistent play hurts Rex

TH team swept by Quincy, falls to 2-2

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Rex fell to 2-2 for the Prospect League baseball season Friday night, getting swept by the Quincy Gems in a two-game set at Bob Warn Field.

The Rex lost 13-7, but look to bounce back today against Dubois County.

Terre Haute couldn’t sustain consistent play in any aspect of the game Friday night as the players look to find their roles with the team.

The offense exploded in the third inning, but had little life otherwise, getting outhit 16-7 by the Gems.

Rex outfielder Michael Schroeder awoke the solid Friday night crowd with his bases-loaded double to the fence in left-center field in the third inning, and Brett Teschner followed with his first home run of the season, a towering two-run shot to right-center field that gives the catcher eight RBIs through four games.

“I feel like I know the way they’re trying to pitch me and I’ve adjusted to it,” Teschner said. “They’re staying away so I’ve just been looking to hit the ball to the other side.”

Rex pitching just couldn’t get the job done against the Gems, who were aggressive on the bases throughout the game. Quincy stole five bases, including three swipes in the fourth inning to answer the Rex’s five-run third inning.

The Rex also answered quickly.

Shortstop Edmund Cheatham showed his potential as a playmaker in the leadoff spot, driving home a run with a grounder and reaching base on the play. Cheatham stole second base and later scored on a wild pitch. Cheatham didn’t break for the plate initially, but Quincy catcher Nick Tindall rushed his toss back to the pitch, sailing it into the infield. Cheatham then knocked the ball from pitcher Ricky Sandquist’s glove when diving into home plate to tie the score at 7-7.

The Rex bullpen got knocked around as Quincy added runs in the sixth and eighth before putting up four in the ninth.

“It’s just a matter of us tightening everything up. Everybody’s kind of getting used to their roles. A lot of these guys are just trying to understand that,” Rex manager Brian Dorsett said.

Rex starter John Oltman, a Creighton freshman who redshirted this spring, made his first start. He fought some control issues.

“He’s going to be all right. He’s got good stuff,” Dorsett said of the left-hander.
