Rex end skid with extra-inning win at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Rex end skid with 10-inning victory over Springfield

The six-game losing streak for the Terre Haute Rex is over.

But not without difficulty.

The Rex defeated the Springfield Sliders 11-7 in 10 innings in a Prospect League game on Sunday. The Rex (21-22) rallied for the victory, tying the game in the ninth and using a four-run 10th to put the struggling Sliders (6-34) away for good.

Terre Haute had itself allowed Springfield back in the contest with a seven-run seventh inning after the Rex had a comfortable 6-0 lead. Five of the runs the Rex conceded in the seventh were unearned as a two-out error by Tyler Wampler kept the inning alive.

Terre Haute picked itself up off the mat in the ninth. Atlee Schwab led off with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored on a Cody Gardner single to left to tie the game at 7.

A two-out rally proved decisive in the 10th. After Evan Heptig drew a walk he scored on a Kalik May double to make it 8-7. Schwab singled in May, Kyle Kempf tripled in Schwab, and Kempf scored on a Gardner single.

Gardner had three RBI and was 3-for-4. Schwab and Andrew Cope each drove in two runs. May, Cope, Kempf, Izaak Silva and Nate Arnold all had doubles to go along with Kempf’s triple.

The game was delayed 48 minutes due to rain and then for a further 25 minutes as the Rex protested field conditions.

Terre Haute is eight games out of a Prospect League West Division playoff spot with 17 games to play in the regular season.

Terre Haute will have a four-day layoff for the Prospect League All-Star break. The All-Star Game will be played at Butler on Wednesday. The Rex resume play Friday as they host Danville.

There is tough luck, but there is also karma. And hitting the ball hard doesn’t seem to make a difference at all. Those were the storylines through the first eight innings of Prospect League baseball Friday night at Bob Warn Field as the Terre Haute Rex treated the biggest crowd in franchise history — 2,172 fans — to a late-inning comeback in a game crucial to second-half West Division championship hopes for the home team.
