Former ISU pitcher John Howes joins Rex as pitching coach

TERRE HAUTE — John Howes’ days at Sycamore Field led him to become a sixth round draft pick of the Montreal Expos.

The left-handed pitcher earned his scholarship at ISU when pitching for the Brazil Red Devils.

While the Expos became the Washington Nationals and the Red Devils have become the Northview Knights, Howes is returning to his old college ballpark to get back into baseball after a long absence.

Howes, a business owner and father of four daughters, in his hometown, will be the pitching coach for the Terre Haute Rex this summer.

The 1986 Baseball America magazine All-American is hoping to help his former catcher at Indiana State, Rex manager Brian Dorsett, develop another solid pitching staff.

“I’m looking forward to it. I think it’s awesome what the Rex have done for the community,” Howes said. “How nice was it in July to go to a game?”

The only pitcher returning to the Rex is reliever Brandon Dorsett so Brian Dorsett and Howes will have to evaluate the staff quickly before Thursday’s home opener against Danville.

The Rex will have a little bit more left-handed pitching on the roster this season after having just one available last summer.

Dorsett hopes Howes, who had an outstanding pickoff move, can help the lefties improve their move.

“I had a decent pickoff move, we talked about holding runners,” Howes said. “With lefties, either they have a good move, and they get some pickoffs, or they’re awful. You have to learn how to hold runners.”

The 56-game season will be a grind for the players, Howes said. The fact that it’s a wooden-bat league is also appealing. Howes pitched four years professionally after his outstanding career for the Sycamores.

“It’s a pretty intense season. We’re not trying to do major things as far as mechanics, that’s really not going to happen,” Howes said. “It’s going to be more of a mental philosophy thing … their approach, how they’ll throw to hitters.”

Dorsett hopes Howes picks up where John Gardner left off last season in the role.

“He had a lot of success, a guy that has a great demeanor about him,” Brian Dorsett said. “I think he’ll have a really positive effect on the staff.”

Rex players will be arriving the next few days, and the team will be practicing at Bob Warn Field.

“I’m excited to get started and be a part of it,” Howes said.
