‘Seven Last Words’ retreat scheduled

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — The Sisters of Providence are sponsoring a retreat that will explore the last statements Jesus Christ made during the crucifixion.

The “Seven Last Words of Christ” retreat has been scheduled for April 11-13, and will include meditation, prayer and music.

Sister Paula Damiano, coordinator of the retreat, hopes those attending will leave with a deeper sense of self and a closer relationship with Christ.

“It will help people come to enter Holy Week in a way where it could have a deeper meaning for them,” Sister Paula said.

Scripture points to seven final “statements” Jesus Christ spoke during the crucifixion. They Include:

• “Father, forgive them for they do not know what they do,”

• “Today, you will be with me in paradise,”

• “Behold your son; behold your mother,”

• “I thirst,”

• “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me,”

• “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit,” and

• “It is finished.”

Each statement can be contained in one or two words – in essence a deepening of the meaning behind the words in each statement.

Sister Paula said the words or phrases associated with each statement include: forgiveness; encouraging in anothers’ goodness; offering comfort; feeling abandoned; thirst; resignation; and acceptance.

During the retreat, Sister Paula said each participant will meditate on the words of each statement, a piece of art associated with the statement and appropriate music for each.

She added that participants will focus on one statement during the first evening of the retreat, before taking on five more on Saturday, and finishing up the weekend with one on Sunday.

Cost for commuters to attend is $85. For those wishing to stay on the grounds during the retreat, cost will be $150 for a private room or $120 for a double room.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to register by April 2.
