The Joy Lady: Wait trust, obey: The greatest match maker of all

TERRE HAUTE — It has finally happened. I never thought I would be able to say, “Well, I’ve never been asked that before,” because I thought I had been asked just about everything. However, yesterday one of my teenage friends asked me, “Verna, just how do I go about finding a wife? I mean, how did husbands find wives in the Bible?”

Hmm … let’s see. Well, Moses found his wife, Zipporah, in an unusual way. He was running from Egypt because he was wanted for murder. When he came to a strange land, he saw seven sisters watering their flocks. He helped them, and their father was so impressed with Moses’ chivalry, he gave him one of his daughters to marry (Exodus 2:16-21).

Samson saw a woman that attracted him, and rather than go up and introduce himself, he went home and told his Mommy and Daddy, “I have seen this woman, and I want her. Now go get her for me.” And it was done! (Judges 14:1-3).

One could always find a wife by holding a beauty contest and marrying the winner. That’s how King Xerxes found Esther. Or one could find a prostitute and marry her, like Hosea did. I suppose if a man is really desperate he could ask God to create a wife for him while he was sleeping, even though it might cost him a rib.

We could always plan a party like the Benjamites did. The women dress up and go out to dance. The men hide and watch the women. When they find one they like, they jump out, grab her and carry her off for an impromptu wedding (Judges 21:19-25).

Then there’s the kind who work for their wives. Jacob agreed to work for seven years for his beautiful Rachel. Yet when he woke up the morning after the wedding, he found he had married runny-eyed Leah. But in order to marry the one he loved, Jacob agreed to work seven more years. That’s 14 years of labor for the love of his life — a commitment any wife could depend on.

I guess I wasn’t very helpful. At least I didn’t tell him to stop being so picky and make up for quality with quantity like King Solomon did.

Seriously, I do have some advice for those seeking a husband or a wife. Or those seeking directions or guidance for their life’s direction. Or those seeking to find God’s will and purpose in their lives. The advice is simple, but not overly so. However, it takes great discipline and patience to follow the advice.

Here it is, in three easy steps: Wait patiently, listen carefully and obey fully. We want answers immediately — God wants immediate obedience. We want warnings about when (or where or how) things are going to happen — God wants our patient trust. We want instant rewards — God wants our lasting faith.

God tells us what he wants us to do in Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.”
