3 downtown churches, UCM to host ‘Holypalooza’

TERRE HAUTE — Three downtown churches and United Campus Ministries, all located across from Indiana State University on Seventh Street, are sponsoring an event that will include a parade with bagpipes, worship, lunch and other activities. Centenary United Methodist Church, Central Presbyterian Church and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church are sponsoring “Holypalooza” from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 25.

The outdoor “block party” event will include only publicity for the youth program and highlight other ministries of the churches. The churches intend for Holypalooza to be a visible sign to the broader community, including students at ISU, that the churches are vibrant and fun in the Terre Haute community.

The three churches and United Campus Ministries also will be conducting a combined worship service that Sunday. At 9:30 a.m. people will gather at National Road Plaza (Seventh and Cherry streets) and at 9:40 begin a procession that includes bagpipe music, to Centenary United Methodist Church, for a combined worship service. Dress is casual for worship and all activities. Those preferring not to be in the procession can go directly to Centenary’s sanctuary, which is accessible by elevator or stairs from Seventh Street, for the 10 a.m. service. A joint adult choir and a children’s group will sing, Dr. Clark will preach, the Lord’s Supper will be served, and Sunday school teachers will be commissioned.

A carry-in lunch is planned from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., served continuously in the great hall at St. Stephen’s. From 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Palooza Plaza” will be open in the parking lot south of Central Presbyterian and will include informational displays about the worship, mission, history and education programs at all of the churches, 7th Cents Youth Group and United Campus Ministries. Community agencies supported by all of the churches will also have display tables. These include Lighthouse Mission, 14th and Chestnut Community Center, Terre Haute Ministries and The Salvation Army.

Activities for all ages are planned and include a Velcro wall, bungee run, bouncer and slide, carnival games and cotton candy.
