‘The Conscience Monologues’ at St. Mary-of-the-Woods

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — There is something moving and powerful in hearing a woman recount her story of faith and courage in today’s world. Plan now to attend a dramatic telling of more than 10 such stories during “The Conscience Monologues: Women’s Stories of Conscience within the Catholic Church” from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. June 22 in Reilly Auditorium, Owens Hall, at St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

The performance, sponsored by Providence Justice Network, a group of Sisters of Providence and companions committed to justice education, is hosting the 8th Day Center for Justice’s “The Conscience Monologues.”

The production is the culmination of a two-year project of the Women in Church and Society Committee of 8th Day Center. “Over 20 women responded to 8th Day’s invitation to write their story in which they share their experiences of conscience and faith, of pain and struggle, of joy and personal truth,” said Kathleen Desautels, SP, justice promoter for the Sisters of Providence and staff member at 8th Day Center. Their stories were transformed into “The Conscience Monologues” to lift up the voices and experiences of Catholic women.

The stories involve women who are struggling with their choice of vocation, lesbian women who are struggling to come out to friends and family, women who have been raped and other tough issues that are difficult to address within the church today.

“The audience as they listen to these sacred stories may have feelings of sadness, or be disturbed or challenged, but are invited to consider why silence needs to be broken in these times,” said Desautels.

The play lasts an hour and 15 minutes with a reception to follow the program, allowing the audience the opportunity to talk among themselves and with the performers. The “The Conscience Monologues” has been performed on stage throughout Chicago and the Midwest.

Reservations are recommended but not required. For more information or to make a reservation, contact Beth Wright at 812-535-2566 or bwright2030@
