Eight Sisters of Providence celebrate their 50th anniversary

ST. MARY-OF-THE-WOODS — Eight Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, recently celebrated their 50th anniversary as members of the Congregation this year. They are Sisters Jeremy Gallet, Elizabeth Koressel, Patricia McGlynn, Janice Ostrowski, Agnes Mary Raetz, Joanna Valentino, Denise Wilkinson and Barbara Ann Zeller.

They are:  

Sister Jeremy Gallet is a native of Chicago. She currently ministers as director of the office of worship for the Archdiocese of Portland (Ore.)

Sister Jeremy entered the Congregation Sept. 12, 1963, from Mary Seat of Wisdom Parish in Park Ridge, Ill. She professed perpetual vows Sept. 29, 1973.

She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor's degree in music education. She received a master's degree in urban education from Indiana University and a master's degree theology from the University of Notre Dame. She received a doctorate in theology and the arts from the Jesuit School of Theology.

Indiana ministries:

Fort Wayne: teacher, St. Patrick School (1968-1972).

Jasper: teacher, St. Joseph School (1972-1976).  

Sister Jeremy also ministered in Illinois, Texas and California.

Sister Elizabeth Koressel is a native of Elberfeld, Ind. She currently ministers as a pastoral associate at Precious Blood Parish in Jasper, Ind.

Sister Elizabeth, the former Sister Mary Andrew, entered the Congregation Sept. 12, 1963, from Corpus Christi Parish in Evansville. She professed perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1971.

She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor's degree in education. She received a master's degree in elementary education from Ball State University and a master's degree in pastoral studies from Aquinas Institute of Theology.

Indiana ministries:

Evansville: teacher, Sacred Heart School (1972-1976 and 1986-1987); Westside Consolidated Catholic School (1976-1977); St. Agnes School (1987-1989).

New Albany: teacher, Catholic Central (1977-1979); St. Mary School (1979-1986).

Fort Wayne: pastoral associate, St. Vincent de Paul Parish (1990-1995).

Sister Elizabeth also ministered in Illinois.

Sister Patricia McGlynn is a native of Chicago. She currently ministers as an educational records clerk at Guerin College Preparatory High School in River Grove, Ill.

Sister Patricia, the former Sister Mary Philip, entered the Congregation Sept. 12, 1963, from Immaculate Conception Parish in Chicago. She professed perpetual vows Nov. 24, 1973.

She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She received a master's degree in elementary education from Indiana University.

Indiana ministries:

Newburgh: teacher, St. John School (1968-1976).

Indianapolis: teacher, Immaculate Heart of Mary School (1976-1982).

Sister Patricia also ministered in Illinois.

Sister Janice Ostrowski is a native of Berwyn, Ill. She currently ministers in library supervision at Guerin College Preparatory High School in River Grove, Ill.

Sister Janice, the former Sister Joachim, entered the Congregation Sept. 12, 1963, from St. Barbara Parish in Chicago. She professed perpetual vows Nov. 10, 1973.

She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor's degree in education. She received a master's degree in education from the National College of Education at National Louis University. She received as associate's degree in business management from Triton College.

Indiana ministries: Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Village: teacher, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Village School (1967-1968).

Sister Janice also ministered in Illinois.

Sister Agnes Mary Raetz is a native of Toledo, Ohio. She currently ministers in prayer at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

Sister Agnes Mary entered the Congregation Sept. 12, 1963, from St. Joan of Arc Parish in Indianapolis. She professed perpetual vows Aug. 15, 1970.

Indiana ministries:

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods: secretary, Generalate staff (1968-1983); secretary, Office of Records (1983-1985); secretary to the general secretary (1985-1986); staff member, Office of Record and Generalate staff (1986-1987); staff member, Providence Phone Room; staff member, Central Business Office (1993-1999); staff member, Office of Congregational Advancement (1999-2006); staff member, Residential Services staff (2006-2007).

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College: clerical assistant, Office of President and Student Affairs (1987-1989).

Sister Joanna Valentino is a native of Chicago. She currently ministers as the administrator for the Ministry of Care at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

Sister Joanna, the former Sister Marie Dominic, entered the Congregation Sept. 12, 1963, from St. Angela Parish in Chicago. She professed perpetual vows Oct. 26, 1969.

She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor's degree in education. She received a master's degree in education from Indiana State University.

Indiana ministries:

Georgetown: manager, Meadows of Guerin, Inc. (2009-2010).

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods: minister of care, Providence Health Care, Inc. (2010-2012).

Sister Joanna also ministered in Illinois.

Sister Denise Wilkinson is a native of Chicago. She currently ministers as general superior of the Sisters of Providence at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods.

Sister Denise, the former Sister Jessica, entered the Congregation Sept. 12, 1963, from St. Mary-of-the-Woods Parish in Chicago. She professed perpetual vows Aug. 25, 1973.

She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor's degree in English. She received a master's degree in counseling from St. Louis University.

Indiana ministries:

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College: assistant dean of residence (1974-1975); dean of residence (1975-1979); vice president of student affairs (1982-1989).

Indianapolis: Congregation's formation director (1991-1996); volunteer, Hispanic Education Center (1991-1993).

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods: director, Office of Congregational Advancement (1996-2001); vicar, general officer (2001-2006).

Sister Denise also ministered in Illinois, Missouri and Massachusetts.

Sister Barbara Ann Zeller is a native of Evansville. She currently ministers as president and chief executive officer of Providence Self Sufficiency Ministries, Guerin Inc. and Meadows of Guerin Inc. at Georgetown, Ind.

Sister Barbara Ann, the former Sister Dorothy Jean, entered the Congregation Sept. 12, 1963, from Corpus Christi Parish in Evansville. She professed perpetual vows Sept. 15, 1974.

She graduated from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College with a bachelor's degree in education. She received a master's degree in studies in aging from North Texas State University.

Jasper: teacher, Precious Blood School (1968).

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods: community director of retirement (1971-1976); infirmary administrator (1976); director of gerontology (1978-1981); consultant for conferences and conventions (1978-1979); executive director, Maryvale (1979-1981).

Indianapolis: administrative assistant, Archdiocese Social Ministries, Archdiocese of Indianapolis (1976-1978).

Terre Haute: director of social services for elderly housing, Pfister Co. (1981-1982).

New Albany: administrator, chief executive officer, Providence Retirement Home (1982-1994); ministry consultant to Sisters of Providence (1994-1995); director, Providence Self Sufficiency Ministries (1995-2006).

The Sisters of Providence, a Congregation of nearly 350 women religious, have their motherhouse at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, located northwest of Terre Haute, Ind. Saint Mother Theodore Guerin founded the Sisters of Providence at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in 1840. Today, Sisters of Providence minister in 19 states, the District of Columbia and Taiwan, Singapore and China.
