‘Lessons and Carols’ Dec. 15 at St. Stephen’s Church

The eighth annual Community Service of Lessons and Carols will be presented at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 215 N. Seventh St.

The format of “Eight Lessons and Carols” was first presented on Christmas Eve in 1880 in Cornwell, England. In 1918, Kings College in Cambridge, England, presented its first “Festival of Eight Lessons and Carols.” It was broadcast in 1918 and, except for one year, has been broadcast to millions of people around the world every year since.

The St. Stephen’s service will feature readers from Terre Haute churches reading familiar Advent and Christmas scripture passages. Readers include representatives of the churches attended by the chorale members. The Farrington Grove Chorale will sing anthems and carols. Hymns will be sung by the congregation and chorale.

The chorale anthems include “The Shepherd's Carol” by Bob Chilcott; “Dona Nobis Pacem” by Z. Randall Stroope; “What Sweeter Music” by John Rutter; “Ave Maria” by Javier Busto; “In Dulci Jubilo” by Matthew Culloton; and an arrangement by Don Neufeld of “The First Noel.”

The Farrington Grove Chorale is a 23-voice chamber choir directed by Mark Carlisle, who is assisted by Jim Hershberger. Organist for the chorale is David Gibbs, and pianists are Gibbs and Anita Gambill. There is no admission charge.
