Climate change, anti-land sales documentary showing at church

TERRE HAUTE — The film “Bidder 70” and a discussion on climate change is set for 7 p.m. today in the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation, at 1875 S. Fruitridge Ave.

Bidder 70 follows Tim Dechristopher, a Utah college student who derailed a widely protested Bush administration federal oil and gas land sale, bidding millions to save thousands of pristine acres surrounding U.S. national parks — with no  intention of paying or drilling.

The act of civil disobedience resulted in his being sentenced to a three-year jail sentence in federal prison, even after the U.S. secretary of the interior invalidated the auction because of the land’s “proximity to landscapes of national significance,” according to a news release issued on behalf of the congregation.

In July 2011, when Dechristopher was sentenced, his supporters sat down in the busiest intersection in Salt Lake City, blocking traffic and trains and refusing to move. Twenty-six supporters were arrested.

After becoming a folk hero for his actions at the  action, Dechristopher became a climate change activist. He is now a national speaker touring the country to educate people that climate change is real.
