Poland Chapel to host ‘An afternoon with Philip Gulley’

TERRE HAUTE — Poland Historic Chapel will present “An afternoon with Philip Gulley” at 2 on Sept. 15.

Gulley comes to Poland as the first of the annual Speakers Series at the historic Chapel within the small town of Poland. He has authored 16 books including the “Harmony Series,” which shares life in the eccentric Quaker community of Harmony and the best-selling “Porch Talk” series of inspiration and humor. He will sign personal copies or those purchased at the event.

Gulley will share small town stories that are sure to not only sound familiar but will warm the hearts of small and large town residents. He attended Marian College in Indianapolis and studied theology and sociology then enrolled at Christian Theological Seminary where he received a master’s degree in 1992. While serving as the pastor of the Irvington Friends Meeting in Indianapolis he began writing essays for the church newsletter. Paul Harvey, Jr. received the newsletters and shared them with a publisher which resulted in an invitation to publish the essays in the form of “Front Porch Tales” and he has been writing ever since.

The Wall Street Journal calls Gulley “a Quaker pastor from Indiana with a charming sense of small-town life — and a shrewd sense of life in general.”

Gulley pastors at Fairfield Friends Meeting near Indianapolis and has hosted television shows on Indiana PBS stations for which he was awarded Emmy Awards in 2007 and 2009.

In 2010 he was presented with the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Christian Theological Seminary.

Cost is $10.
