Church presents ‘Love Languages’ author’s video seminar on Valentine’s weekend

Registration at Mount Pleasant concludes today at 4 p.m.

TERRE HAUTE — Gary Chapman wrote the original edition of “The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted” in 1979.

Now a nationally known author and relationship counselor, with a radio program heard on more than 100 stations across the United States, Chapman first published the book under the title, “Toward a Growing Marriage,” 35 years ago. The book has been revised several times in the intervening years.

“I’ve learned a lot since 1979,” Chapman said, chuckling, in a telephone interview with the Tribune-Star last week.

He also published the New York Times bestseller series of books, “The Five Love Languages.”

This Valentine’s Day weekend, Chapman’s insights into marriage, love and communication will be shared in a video conference, led by Chapman, that married or engaged couples can view and participate in at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church’s south campus worship center, 3050 E. Davis Drive, Terre Haute.

The seminar runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday and costs $15 per couple. Lunch and a guide book are included. Those wishing to participate need to contact Ginger Pruitt at the church office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. today at 812-232-4808.

The event includes practical sessions covering communication differences, dealing with criticism and understanding your mate’s “love language.” Chapman wrote the New York Times bestseller “Five Love Languages.” “You have to learn to speak their love language if you want them to feel loved,” he said.

The love languages, Chapman explained, are methods by which people can express and experience love through gifts, quality time, words of affirmation, acts of service and physical touch. For couples, the key is offering a spouse the language he or she needs most. He wrote the “Five Love Languages” in 1995, 16 years after that first book. The “Love Languages” supports “The Marriage You’ve Always Wanted,” which is the focus of the Mount Pleasant video conference.

“I discovered the ‘Five Love Languages’ after I wrote that book, which has been a tremendous insight to help a lot of couples learn how to connect to each other, or stay connected to each other emotionally,” he said.
