St. George’s Episcopal

Sunday’s (Aug. 17) Christian Education topic will be “The Seven Little Letters from the Bible” led by the Rev. Michael Stichweh from Indianapolis. Adult Christian Education is from 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. in Taylor Hall. Sunday’s Letters from the Bible theme will carry through three visits from Stichweh.

Stichweh also will be celebrant for Holy Eucharist, Rite II, which begins at 10 a.m. in the sanctuary.

St. George’s Episcopal Church, “the friendly little church on the hill,” is located at 1337 N. Smith Place (on Ferguson Hill), West Terre Haute. For more information contact Kelly Hammonds, bishop’s warden, (217) 826-5439; kellyjo829@yahoo.com or go to www.stgeorgeswth.indydio.org.

Stichweh, who served most of his ministry as a parish priest and headmaster in New York City, retired to downtown Indianapolis in 2005 after “semi-retirement” in Florida.

Stichweh moved to Winter Park, Fla., in 1995 and became part-time priest-in-charge at St. Matthias Church in Clermont, Fla. The church increased in size and a larger building was needed, as was a full-time priest. Stichweh then fully retired and moved to downtown Indianapolis.

Coffee hour with food and fellowship follows the service. All are welcome to attend all services.

Berean Baptist

The 9:30 Bible Study Hour features Lauren Lopez teaching the Junior Class with a series of captivating lessons based on the Bible. Lauren is an outstanding teacher and is loved by her students. The Teen Class leaves the church at 9:20 bound for Burger King where they are engaged in challenging teaching, questions and answers from God’s word as it relates to their everyday life. The Adult Bible Class meets in the auditorium of the church, though there is a move afoot to relocate this class to Arby’s in order to make room for another class. The adults are willing to sacrifice for this to happen.

The 10:30 worship service features a sermon by Pastor Larry Lilly titled, “America’s Deadliest Disease: Affluenza.” This biblical message will identify the disease and also the cure that is by and large rejected. The disease which was given an official name by Judith Warner in her New York Times column “Camp Codependence” dealing at length with the symptoms of this rampaging sickness that according to her, and I might add the Bible, is pervasive and no one is immune. This modern disease is far more devastating than the Influenza Epidemic of 1919 and kills far more people. Larry will share the biblical antidote and just how you can apply this cure.

Charlie Davis and Betty Sontag will present special music.

At 6 Pastor Lilly will preach on the subject, “Getting A Hair Cut In The Devil’s Barbershop.” Yes, this sermon is about Samson and Delilah and the lessons we can learn to keep from falling into the tender traps the Devil sets out along the path of our life. There were several seldom mentioned factors in Samson’s background that pretty much demanded the mess he made of a gifted life. Larry will point these out and how to overcome these and other background factors in your life.

Ron Fivecoat and the Quartet will present special music.
