RAMBLIN' RECK: Now for a few football landmark… both north and south

TERRE HAUTE — Some milestones were recorded in Indiana high school football games played Friday night.

n Heritage Hills blanked Pike Central 75-0 for a 3-0 record in Pocket Athletic Conference action at Lincoln City.

For veteran coach Bob Clayton, it was victory No. 314 against 71 defeats in 30-plus seasons of coaching. He is in third place in state coaching marks behind Jerry Brewer, former Jasper coach, with 368-105 and current Sheridan coach Bud Wright with 362-159.

Clayton has coached Jay Cutler, quarterback for the Chicago Bears, and other pro players as well as countless others who earned honors in college football.

Pike Central had snapped a 27-game losing streak the previous week by beating Princeton.

• Gehrig Dieter of South Bend Washington set a national record with 437 receiving yards in his team's 63-10 victory over Elkhart Central. He broke the old mark of 421 held J.D. Felice of Rose Bud, Ark., in 2008.

Dieter also had set the state record in 2008 with 373 in the season opener against Bloomington North and came back with 346 the following week against Michigan City.

In the area, Union didn't set any record but the Bulldogs bested Indiana Deaf 40-24 for its second victory after losing to powerful North Central in the season opener.

You have to give coach Todd Gambill and his players a lot of credit.

Union had been the smallest public school, enrollment-wise, in the state to play football and probably still  has that distinction. Less than 20 players were dressed for that opening game at North Central.

Three Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference games were played Friday night with no surprise winners.

Warren Central thumped Lawrence North 55-7 while Carmel bested Center Grove 42-17 and Ben Davis beat Indianapolis North Central 54-21.

Terre Haute South entertains Carmel this week and Terre Haute North goes against Center Grove in a road game.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Northern Iowa was nipped 20-19 by Iowa State in their college football opener.

• Tickets now are on sale for the 2012 BMW Championship on the PGA Tour to be played Sept. 3-9 at Crooked Stick in  Indiana. Ticket information is available at (847) 724-4600.

n Evansville Memorial shot 337 to win the Evansville city girls golf championship. North was second with 351.

• The Evansville Otters defeated the Southern Illinois Miners 6-4 to conclude the season with a 39-57 mark, going 25-23 in the second half of the Frontier League.

Andy McCauley has been rehired as manager for next season.

• Mike Woodson has been hired as an assistant on the staff of the New York Knicks. The former IU Hoosier formerly coached Atlanta.

Former IU coach Bob Knight will speak at Clowes Hall on the Butler campus at Indy on Sept. 14. Ticketmaster is selling tickets.

• Tennis ace Venus Williams has enrolled for an online class offered by IU East. She recently was sidelined by illness and stated she has suffered from fatigue for some time.
