RAMBLIN' RECK: Regionals, semistate action put area prep athletes in overtime

TERRE HAUTE — School will be out for all high school students this week, but some athletes will go overtime as they continue postseason action as a result of weekend success.

Terre Haute South and North Central baseball teams will seek semistate victories and a trip to the state finals, while the South Putnam softball team goes for a Class 2A state championship.

At the same time, boys golf teams concluded sectional play Monday and will seek regional honors later in the week. South Vermillion took second at Crawfordsville last week and will be in the regional at Coyote Crossing.

South probably will face Indianapolis Cathedral in baseball, as the Irish took a 26-2 mark into their Class 4A regional title game against Westfield, scheduled to be concluded Monday. If that happens, it’s likely that Cathedral ace Dillon Peters will be matched against South ace A.J. Reed.

Peters is the Gatorade Indiana Player of the Year, batting .375 and having a pitching ERA of 1.71.

North Central is 24-5 and will face 20-10-1 Loogootee in the Class A semistate. That will give the Thunderbirds extra motivation, since it was Loogootee that defeated North Central in a controversial softball regional game.

Craig Bell is the lone senior on the Thunderbird roster and has had a banner postseason. He hurled a two-hitter in the regional championship game against Bethesda Christian and hit four homers in sectional and regional games, giving him 11 for the season, one shy of the school record.

In the Class 3A southern semistate, Edgewood will be one of the teams. The Mustangs bested Heritage Hills 5-4 for regional honors.

South Putnam will take a 27-1 mark into the Class 2A title tilt against 26-2 Woodlan. Former Shakamak/Wabash College athlete Chris Jones is the coach of the Eagles.

In the Class A finale, Lakewood Park Christian faces Tecumseh, a 7-6 winner over Edinburgh in eight innings.

Fans from Rising Sun and Edinburgh had to split allegiances on Saturday. Both schools had teams in softball and baseball games at the same time. Rockville had the same dilemma in the northern half of Class A postseason play.

Carmel will face Avon in the Class 4A softball championship, while Roncalli is set for the 3A game after beating Edgewood 3-2 and Gibson Southern 4-2 in the semistate.

In tennis, Carmel claimed another girls team title, beating Floyd Central 4-1 in the semis and Evansville Memorial 3-2 in the finals. It was the fifth title for Carmel, all under Indiana State grad Sharon Rosenburgh. It also was Carmel’s 100th state championship.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Terre Haute North grad Logan Shipley will have a chance to play NCAA Divisilon I basketball as a preferred walk-on at IPFW. He averaged 11 points for the Patriots last season.

Indiana all-star teams had practice games against junior all-stars on Monday at Washington and will have girls and boys games on Wednesday at Kokomo in preparation for weekend games with Kentucky.

• Big Ten officials awarded Indianapolis the football championship games through 2015. Basketball championships will rotate with Chicago, with Indiana having the games in 2012, 2014 and 2016.

• Indiana State player Jake Kelly and four other players had a pre-draft NBA tryout with the Indiana Pacers on Monday.

• Indiana High School Athletic Association officials may decide to move the site of the girls basketball state finals after declining attendance and finances at Fort Wayne the past two years, mainly because of location for teams involved in the finals.

Terre Haute, Fort Wayne and Evansville are three cities being considered for the finals, since a site again will not be available in Indianapolis.

• The 25th annual Templeton Memorial ISU golf outing is Friday at Eagle Ridge in Paris, Ill. Players wishing information or to enter may call (217) 466-4201.

• The new coach for the Indiana Pacers will have three new assistants. One published report said Terre Haute native Frank Hamblen would be interested in returning to the state. He has been a longtime aide under Phil Jackson in Chicago and Los Angeles.

The Pacers and Fox Sports have dismissed studio host and sideline reporter Stacy Paetz.

• Nearly 200 members of the Eagles were in town for the state golf tournament. They were at Rea Park on Saturday and were slated to play Hulman Links on Sunday.

• Three players will vie for one slot in the Indiana Amateur today at Hulman Links. Big Ten freshman of the year Adam Schenk, South grad Phillip Myers and prep ace Adam Cook are the three players.
